Check if the "NUM LOCK" is on, if yes, press "FN+NUM LOCK" is turn off. FN means function key. After doing it try to login again to your yahoo messenger. I hope it works.

1. Make sure you have a stable internet connection.
2. Check for spelling and capital letters on your username and password when signing in.
3. Upgrade the Internet Explorer of your Windows. Yahoo products like yahoo messenger rely its connection via Internet Explorer. (Doesn't matter if you are using different internet browser like firefox or safari...just upgrade IE)

Open Yahoo Messenger and at the bottom in blue letters, click on "Get new Yahoo Id..", follow the steps to create your account and once your done, go back to yahoo messenger and sign in. Cheers!

Please check your user id and password.. check the capital letters. If you are very sure then check if your internet connection is stable. Try closing first all the programs that requires accessing the net. Then sign in in your ym. If you are using a wireless router or broadband then I suggest you turn off the firewall setting permanently.

Am sure you have missed a letter in your password or you have probably change ur email address and the password. if it is that automatically, u will not be able to sign in

you may have lost your cookies.
Have you got 2 browsers on your PC?. Its always handy for troubleshooting. I use IE and Firefox, If something is not working with one I launch the other.
Most sign in problems can be cured by cleaning up internet browsers and re-setting cookies
Try this.
Download ccleaner and give it a couple of runs include 'registry' from left hand toolbar. Do not be alarmed by the amount of files you have to delete - especially if you do not clean out your browser on a daily basis.

Make sure 'caps lock' is not applied and type your password where you can read it, to ensure you have no sticky letters or numbers transposed.
Set your status to "offline" in yahoo MAIL by using the dropbox next to your name. This will allow you to have mail and messenger open at the same time.
