I can't get my hard drive to format; I've fdisked and installed a new partition. At a:\> I typed fortmat c: and enter and it says bad command or file name. what else can I try?

To format your hard disk reboot your computer and at the first logo hit f8. When you come to the advanced troubleshooting menu arrow up to safe mode with command prompt and hit enter. It will then take you to the C:... with a blinking cursor. If you don't have the C: , if you have an A: or something similar type in there C: and hit enter. It should then bring you to the C: After that you will need to type in the following: vol and hit enter. This will display your volume label which you will need to format your hard drive. Once this is displayed it will then take you back to the C: then type format /C: and hit enter. It will then ask you for the volume label, type in what you see just above on the screen for your volume label and hit enter. It will then ask you if you are sure you want to format, type Y and hit enter. Youre computer will then go through the format process and your hard drive will then be WIPED. Make sure that you have all of your important files backed up as you will not have them any longer once this process is complete. You will then be able to exit out and if you have a partition with your backup on it you should be able to just reboot and Windows will begin to load. Otherwise you will need to install Windows with your CD. Hope this was of some help. Any questions, let me know!
