Hi wakjh

sounds like 28 years of service has gotten the better of the old girl. You will need to replace at least the capstan belt to get the speed back up. It will need attention in other areas also. reel idler tyres, takeup clutch, counter belt.
You can get a complete belt kit from here.

Akai recording problem

You might have a bad cable to the recorder (try swapping the right and left connections and see if the problem moves to the other channel), dirty tape heads (use a cotton swab and head cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to clean them), or a circuit problem inside the recorder. Hope this gets you started!

I have an AKAI GX-4000D reel to reel machine. It plays small 3" tapes at the right speed, but when I try and play a 7" tape, the sounds are very, very fast and I can't make out what's being...

Hello,
Yes, that seems to be your problem.

Regardless of the size of reel.
When the:
Capstan sleeve installed is 7 1/2 IPS
Capstan sleeve not installed is 3 3/4 IPS
Hope this helps.

Hi osujah

Most probably the record play switching causing the problem. It is the long switch that is connected to the transport, and switches when you engage record. Flooding this switch with CRC 2-26 usually cures the symptoms you have. Just be careful not to get ahy near the transport:) Check it out and get back to me here is it does not sort out the problem. Cheers.
