Question about Whirlpool GEW9250 Electric Dryer

1 Answer

Kenmore he4 dryer model # 110.85089400

My wife has been complaining about the dryer making brown/rust streaks on the light colored clothes. After looking into the drum, the only thing I can see is maybe the drum seal is letting clothes get out and rubbing something outside. Most marks are only one to two inches long. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. Rust streaks on my clothes and sheets. Is it worth it to fix the bearings as in the last case or purchase a new dryer?

Drum seal tends to change to a rust color after a few years of use 2 options replace both front and rear seal(best) or remove drum and try to clean both seals with bleach /water solution or spray cleaner with bleach ..if seals are not worn to bad this may work as a tempory fix

Brown streaks on flat, thin items like pillow

Hi Witt and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

The brown streaks are most likely rust. There are drum seal replacement kits you can buy to start anew. The streak source need to be identified. If the drum is rusted your going to have to sand and paint it with an enamel appliance paint. However.... if it is the back of the cabinet that is the source of the rust in the felt seal rub area if you do not allow the paint to dry well before reassembly it will end up flaking off on your clothes.

Here is the drum seal with adhesive:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/WHIRLPOOL-Rear-drum-felt-seal-with-adhesive--red-thread--item-number-AP3094149.aspx

Once you in there I would replace the belt and inspect the drum rollers.

Belt:

Rollers:

The belt I would replace... Just make sure if you attempt repair that you NOTE the routing of the dryer belt through the idle pulley to the motor pulley.

If the rollers rotate freely with no teetering froward or aft and do not have any flat spots you do not have to replace them.

Appliance paint by color needed:

Hello I have an 2004 HE4 Nat Gas smartheat quick pack 9 model 9587 / 110.9586. It seems to be leaving brown markings or streaks on the clothes more and more frequently any ideas on how to best deal with...

the felt seal part number 697694 could be worn,if the drum sags down from the felt wearing down it forms a gap and the clothing can even get stuck in gap, some dryers have glides that wear down and some ride on a back bearing, but the problem usually is from a part wearing down and a gap forms from it and it damages the clothing, hope this helps

Same thing

Liquid fabric softners usually cause spots and/or marks on light colored clothing . If you rewash the clothing and the marks dissapear , then try using dryer sheets instead . However , if you have an older dryer , then clothing could be getting rubbed between the rear drum seal and panel , but that would cause streaks but no spotting .

Brown marks on my light coloured clothes

I just noticed My Frigidaire doing the same thing. Using a lightly soapy damp cloth, I cleaned the interior, paying particular attention to the small gap between the drum and the housing. I also took apart the lint pre-filter and screen and cleaned them. There was a filmy build up of the same colored substance. I suspect that dryer sheets are leaving a waxy residue that over time is sufficient enough to rub off on lighter colored, primarily synthetic, fabrics.

Brown streak on clothes

Hi,

It could be from scorching due to getting too hot. This may be the start of a problem for you.

It is best to judge how long clothes need drying for before drying them. If they are left too long, sometimes the heat builds up.

Try a smaller load in there, and if you can reduce the temperature any then do.

Often it's just overloading is the issue.

Hope this is a solution for you, If so, Please rate as Fixya! Thanks.

Dryer is leaving brown streaks on cotton clothes

To all victims of the brownish colored streak marks: I share your frustration!!! I have the same problem with my dryer which started when my dryer was only 3 or 4 years old - - totally unacceptable for an expensive top of the line dryer! A repair guy showed me how the brownish streak marks come from the felt liner which goes around the drum. Look inside your dryer for the beige or tan colored felt which sticks out around the circular drum. If you rub the felt with an old white t-shirt or paper towel, you will see the same brownish colored marks. My repairman recommended getting the felt replaced eventually, but until then, he gave me the following tips which really help avoid getting the streaks: For white or light colored clothes susceptible to the brownish streak marks: I dry these items as part of a very lightweight dryer load - with just a few other lightweight items. By doing a small lightweight load, clothing is less likely to get caught up & rub against the felt edges. For example, I dry 4 light colored men's dress shirts with 2 or 3 other lightweight shirts. OR for white or light colored athletic "dry fit" type athletic apparel, I dry 6 - 8 total lightweight shirts/shorts. If I throw my white Nike top or white pair of summer pants into the dryer with all my "whites", they will be doomed to getting brownish streaks due to the heavy load pushing them against the darned felt liner! Whenever possible, I wash susceptible items on permanent press to avoid wrinkling, then hang dry. Prior to putting these clothes in the dryer, I also "pre-clean" the felt with an old white cotton t-shirt by reaching into the dryer and rubbing along the felt edges until I'm not getting as much brownish color on the t-shirt rag. For a permanent fix, call a repairman or see the following do-it-yourself YouTube video on "Dryer Repair - Replacing the Lower Front Drum Felt Seal": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoYP_YsGP68 . I have a repair person coming today to fix 2 other appliances, so I'm finally getting my dryer fixed, and I will post an update soon.
