Probably the LCD screen is damaged. The backlight is integrated in the LCD asembly. You can get replacement LCD screens here:

Cant read the menu. Is backlight broken.? I can see the word garnin when I turn power on. But the menu is difficult to read- Is it konfigutation for dark or light screen?

It depends on the model - but CCFL tubes are used by Garmin to light the screen of GPS devices. A CCFL tube comes with a high voltage inverter to power the tube. Meaning either the CCFL Tube or the Inverter can be dead.

Symptom is a barely readable screen and becomes a bit more visible when looked at from an angle. No light comes from the screen at all.

The inverter can be tested by holding oscilloscope leads close to the screen. A sinus waveform of about 50 - 60 Khz should be visible when the device is powered at full screen intensity.

Will not retain screen image. Flashes the content when you push the on/off button and is clearly projecting data, but just in flashes.

It appears you may have a bad backlight. If you can see the picture content with a strong light shining at an angle to the screen while it is dark, then it is definitely the backlight. Most sets shut down shortly after getting a failure signal from the backlight inverter although you do not mention that happening.

The backlight uses two or more Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) tubes, and they'll have the same flickering as a failing standard fluorescent tube. If the light has a pinkish cast to it, this is a common sign that one or both of the tubes is bad. You may see the flashing on the top or the bottom and the other half of the screen will be dark; this means one tube is dead and the other is dying.

My screen is totally blank. how can i diagnose what's wrong?

A) Suggest you start with seeing if graphics are being shown, but not displaying on the LCD screen.

May be an Inverter problem.

1) Laptop on, use a flashlight, and shine it at the LCD screen. Shine the flashlight at an angle.

Do you see faint images?

2) Laptop off, plug in a VGA monitor to the VGA connector on the back of the laptop. Turn the VGA monitor on, and turn the laptop on. (Do NOT have the laptop running, and plug the monitor into it)

This is what a VGA connector looks like,

(Photo to the right. The VGA monitor cable's connector is shown to the Left)

Press the Fn key, hold it down, and press the key that toggles over the graphics to an external monitor. The key will have a monitor icon symbol on it. (Empty rectangle)

Do you have graphics on the External monitor?

1) expounded on:

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself.
For this reason an additional light source is provided.

A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Lamp = Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

An Inverter is used to provide power for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

The laptop's power is not enough to power the LCD screen, so the power is increased for the LCD screen by the Inverter.

The power from the laptop is too much for a Backlight, so the power is decreased for the Backlight by the Inverter.

90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter, not the Backlight.
An Inverter is a small circuit board located within the Display Assembly.

The Display Assembly consists of;
1) The top panel of the laptop that you see with the laptop closed.

2) The LCD screen (Assembly. More on that in a minute)

3) The Bezel. The thin frame in front of the LCD screen, that surrounds the LCD screen. Looks like a 'Picture Frame'

4) The metal frame that holds the LCD assembly together, and it's screws.

5) The brackets that are screwed to the LCD assembly frame, and then the brackets are screwed to the top panel.

6) The Inverter. A small circuit board, (Usually as long as your longest finger, and about the same width), located BEHIND the Bezel, and at the bottom of the LCD screen

7) Wireless Antenna

8) Backlight. Description already provided. The Backlight is inside the metal frame that surrounds the LCD assembly. On one edge. (Sometimes more than one Backlight is used)

The LCD screen is an assembly. What you see on the outside is a protective screen.

If I may;

This is an example of an Inverter for an Everex Stepnote VA4300M,

I await your findings. Post in a Comment.

Black screen on booting my Compaq 610 notebook

If it seems like you're accessing the hard drive (drive light comes on, flickers intermittently, then goes off, it's a good chance your screen is bad.

First thing to do is plug in an external monitor and start up the laptop. If it comes up with windows, you know it's the screen.

To find out if it's the backlight, or the lcd, toggle the monitor function and shine a flashlight on a slight angle to the screen. If you can faintly see what was displayed on the external monitor, then the backlight inverter is probably bad.

If the external monitor didn't come up, you're probably looking at a motherboard.

The good thing is that all of those are covered for one year under Compaq's warranty, on a new machine.

If you are able to use the external monitor, back up your data, because HP/Compaq usually reformat the harddrive. Additionally, if you've added memory, pull the cards. They want it sent back the way it came from the factory.

Screen is to dark. cannot see letters very well.

Suggest you press the Fn key And the key to increase brightness, first. (Should be a key that has a sun icon on it)

Barring this does not increase the visibility of your LCD screen, the I suggest the Backlight is bad, or the Inverter.

The Backlight is a type of CCFL tube (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) mounted to the LCD screen. The LCD screen needs the light given off of the Backlight.

Replacing the Backlight is a daunting task, and if done wrong, will cause possible damage to the LCD screen.

The LCD screen itself has a thin metal frame holding the components of the LCD screen together. This frame must usually be opened on the side that has the backlight, to access the backlight. The components that make up an LCD screen are fragile, and can easily be damaged.

The Inverter supplies power to the LCD screen, as well as the Backlight.
Inverters do go bad, but commonly it's the Backlight to go first.

This shows a typical Backlight replacement. It IS not an advertisement to attempt this yourself, but a reference tool for information.

Audio O/K no picture . Model Sharp LC-32SH12U. Thanks "Larry"

Check for a backlight failure by holding a flashlight on the screen at about a 30-degree angle, a couple of inches from the screen. Look at the area around the flashlight beam. If you see video, either your backlight fluorescent tubes are burned out or the inverter has gone bad. If you need tubes, search for "CCFL replacement" (CCFL = cold cathode fluorescent lamp").
