Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

The waste pipe on my hotpoint dishwasher is connected to a spigot. I now want to buy a Bosch replacement but all models have a waste pipe which is too small in diameter to fit the existing spigot. A smaller spigot does not seem to exist and there is no room to install a stand pipe. Can you suggest a solution? Thanks

Do you have a garbage disposal? It is usually easier to drain through the garbage disposal. There is a fitting for this on all disposals. Be sure to remove the knock out plug first.

My newly installed dishwasher won't drain, what could be the cause?

If the dishwasher is connected to a spigot on the waste under the sink, check that the end has been cut off the spigot (on the plumbing not the machine hose) or that end stoppers have been removed. Also, check the hose has not been crushed when installed.

Does the outlet pipe have to go directly into the spigot on the kitchen sink trap? or can it go into a free standing waste pipe /

The plumbing code in your area will specify where you can or can't go with the outlet line. You wouldn't want to attach it to a line where any waste from another source would pass the dishwasher connection line, because the waste could flow back into the dishwasher. That's why you normally route it to the sink or garbage disposal (no concerns about waste from another source getting into the dishwasher line).

Will not empty water, and stops before end of cycle. Doesn't appear to be any blockages. Filters have always been in place, and appear clean on inspection. No twists or sharp bends in drainage pipes.

most common faults with dishwashers is a drain fault. Check for any kinked hoses and check the drain spigot under the sink where the drain hose connects into the u bend. Usually this is where food gets trapped due to the spigot not being drilled out large enough. This then causes a blockage. Also check the non return valve under the filter and make sure the drain pump can turn freely.
Hope this helps.

Hooking carbage disposal to diswashing not sure where it hooks on the dishwasher itself

Waste line from dishwasher to waste connects to one of
  • small spigot on extension pipe above the disposal up high under counter
  • small spigot on side of disposal directly above sewer connection, below blade
  • small spigot on sewer line below disposal, but above U trap
at the dishwasher end, the hose connects to the pump output, under the base of the dishwasher, usually left side of center, there is no external spigot
you have to run the waste line under from the back, and connect from the front , by removing the kick plate under the door opening

Waste Pipe

you haven't said a make and it is presumably a washer but:
waste pipe clips usually onto a spigot on the pump housing. should be accessible by tilting machine backwards. on some machines easier to remove the back plate

yes it can. however check that the spigot is not blanked off - they usually are to prevent water gushing out when you empty the sink. remove the blank

Hotpoint dishwasher

Did you have a dishwasher before? If so, you must have had a sink tail piece with a dishwasher drain coming off the side. For the connection, you may have to get an adapter to fit the end of the dishwasher drain hose to the sink tail piece. Take all pieces to hardware store if necessary to get an adapter which fits. After you connect the drain hose, make sure that the drain hose has a "high loop", meaning that the hose curls up at least 6 inches above the connection point before it goes down again. This is important to keep sink waste from getting back into the diswasher hose if the sink drain backs up.

Hotpoint Superplus 7822 dishwasher

At the beginning of the cycle the dishwasher is attempting to pump out any residue water in the waste pipe and sump. It could be that the motor is sticking but you would probably also suffer from it not draining properly.
It may just be noisy pump. I have a similar model and it is also quite noisy but nothing extraordinary.
When the dishwasher is pumping out at the end of the washing cycle it may be quieter when there is water in the pump/pipes but then gets noisy as it 'pumps air'.
