Wireless with no cable to wireless laptop

Please help me - I have purchased a Belkin Wireless Router and brought home and it had to be wired to a PC to work - went back to store got a Linksys Wireless G router as the cheaper Belkin was out of stock. The clerk assured me I would not have to connect an ethernet cord to my laptop. The disk tells me to connect the blue wire from the router to the laptop - - -do I have to connect this to a computer with a wire in order to be wireless????

Trying a add another desk top to an existing Belkin wireless G router at home. Right now there's a desk top and laptop working off this router.Try several times and still can't connect to internet.

Make sure the Belkin wireless is the only device directly connecting to your internet service provider's router/modem. Usually that port is labelled "WAN" or even "Internet". The Belkin should have extra ports/jacks for WIRED connections, right? You then connect the PC into the other remaining ports/jacks on the Belkin (if they're wired) or just use the wireless for the laptop if the laptop has wireless. After getting the wireless going, though, you should lock it down by using WPA encryption key if possible.

Have wireless signal but no IP

Starting from the obvious, check that the cables are installed correctly.
You have to have a cable that brings the internet to your place.
Connect that cable into the router's jack labeled Connection to Modem.
Then get another network cable and plug it into any other jack form the back of your wireless router, and the other end into your laptop, just to make sure you are getting connected.
Once you are sure you can surf the net, unplug the wire from your laptop, and you should be able to surf wirelessly.

And if you still can't connect, let me know to perform additional steps.

Please don;t forget to rate this answer if helps.

Set up

OK. First unhook everything. Connect and power on your cable/DSL modem, next plug in the ethernet cable from the modem into the router, there is a specific jack for this, you can then power on the router. Next attach your desktop and any other computers you wish to use with wires to the router and power them on. Your wireless should work by default, but if it doesnt type 192.168.0.0 and type the default password, generally admin, and change the settings in the wireless security menu to set up your wireless laptop.

Do you have DHCP enabled on your PC? Sounds like you are not getting the IP address.
