Re: thank you for your help last time
256 mb of memory is not very much. It's the bare minimum you can get by with running Windows XP. Adding more would certainly be an improvement. Only 1 gig of free space left on an 80 gig hard drive is not much room for Windows to work with. I would definitely try to get rid of or back up some files to make more room. You should also run a system clean up and do a defragmentation of the hard drive.
You should keep your anti virus software up to date if you have one installed. If not you can go HERE and run Trend Micro's Houscall on your PC. Viruses and Spyware will bog down a system and cause it to run extremely slow.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Swapping the hard drive from the Dell into the Gateway will not work because the Dell hard drive has been installed with Dell specific drivers and configurations. When you install the Dell hard drive into the Gateway you need to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy Windows XP onto this hard drive and the Gateway device drivers etc.
Check www.crucial.com. Use the downloadable program to analyze your system or use the interactive menu system to explore your options.
Check online forums using google searches for terms like 'dell 5150 memory upgrade'. Sometimes, the maximum in the manual is not the real maximum. My Dimension 1000 laptop accepted a certain 1 GB card when the manual said the max was 256MB. Still running it after nearly ten years. The laptop was **** with 512MB (256 built-in and 256 add-on card) but the gf uses it every day.
It will run but if you want smooth full graphics you will need to get a better video card. of course 4 gigs of ram is better then 2 but if you are running 32 bit windows then you are stuck with a max of 3 gigs of ram.
That machine is too underpowared to run xp pro.
Windows XP Media Center Edition 1.6 GHz CPU, 256MB Ram, and DirectX 9 hardware-accelerated GPU
you may get it to run but it is going to be dead slow. you will be waiting forever to load any apps with a processor under a gig, and less than 512 mhz of memory, it may work for emulation, but that's even questionable. I don't want to aggrvate you but that config is a decade old. Vista for instance needs at least 2 gigs of ram and a dualcore to run right. sorry bud, if you are dead set on it, the only thing you coula do is juice up the memory, to whatever the board is rated to take, or I would run windows 98, peace
Geek squad will charge you a lot and not do anything. Uninstall McAfee and spy sweeper. McAfee slows down all computers.
Do the following and let me know if it helps.
Turn the system restore off. System restore
keeps everything in restore. Meaning......... If you have spyware or a
virus, it will stay in your system. Run Spybot S&D (This program is
free and is better than using msconfig as long as you go through the
settings and change everything to the highest settings.) Then do the same with
Adaware 2008 (sounds stupid to use 2 things for spyware, but one catches what
the other one does not.). I have links on my website
(tandnfamilyelectronics-online.com). These links go directly to the
download so you will not get the run around. You would do good to try a
program called Window Washer. This is a great program that completely
cleans anything in your computer that you do not need. It will not clean
out anything that you have to have. I have used this for years to clean
out my customers computers and have cleaned as much as 3 gigs of trash
out. If you contact me I will give you some tools that I have for free
that will do a great job on your computer. I have them ready to download
and I will give you the link.
Send me the complete specs of your system and I can help you more. I hope
that this helps you. There is no reason the really buy a program for
spyware when there are free things to use that work great. Free AVG is a
great Antivirus and yes it is also free. It will check your e-mail coming
and going. It will also let your friends now that the E-mail does not
have a virus. It also has a spyware program that is free. This day
and time with all of the spyware out on the net you can never have too many
programs for spyware. I would not run all of them at the same time
though. Make sure that you do not use your computer during any
scan. Defrag is also something to do after you do everything else.
Some people will tell you that should not reload your computer. If
nothing seems to work then sometimes that is the only good way to get it
repaired right. Most of the programs that come pre-installed on a store
bought computer is useless and most are even trail software that causes
problems when they expire. Let me know if this helps at all. Please
rate me if it helps.
What normally causes this problem is messy clutter. First run "msconfig". Goto to the startup tab and check the button "disable all". Reboot, the system will start only what it needs. U can go back in to have the items start that U really want later. Do not go online at this time. Use Defrag and defrag all U'r drives. This may have to be done a coupla' times to remove as much red as possible. Prior to defraging, U should go through the Add/Remove (control panel) and get rid of any programs U don't want anymore.
This will cleanup U'r system and restore U'r speed.
There are many programs and games that will not or not run well on the 2000 os. It was not designed for game playing, it will but not well. Upgrade U'r os to the XP, it's a big improvement.
There is also a program call Jkdefrag that does an exellent job of defraging and managing the hd.
Recommend that U clean and defrag U'r system at least once a month. The more install the more U should use "Msconfig" and defrag.
I'm thinking it's time to add more RAM to it. With the amount of space that's used up i'm imagining that your hard drive light is flashing alot now. I recommend that you put an extra gig of RAM in it. I hope this sorts out the problem for you.
