Question about EliteGroup ECS G733 Notebook

Bad Motherboard caps

Hi fellow Canadian
I'm also an expert here at Fixya...haven't had time to be online much lately, but I have a "Genuine MDG" notebook with the G733 motherboard, and all the Teapo brand 1500uf, 6.3V caps are either buged at the top, or pushing out the rubber stopper at the bottom. My only problem is, I can't find any source for these caps that are 12.5mm tall like the originals, and it doesn't look like taller ones will fit..I've tried Global in Toronto, Digikey, and several websites.. Where did you get your replacement caps?

Thanks,

Fairlane

I found these caps from old mother borads, such as 80486... you may even find them from some video cards.. if no luck, solder lead wirs away from the solder pads.

The bad news is the motherboard has major issues, first remove main battery, no change, sub out the ram memory one at a time and test, if everything remains the same the motherboard will need to be replaced.

Just out of curiosity, you haven't got a usb device plugged in as you are booting the laptop have you?
If not, try this:

Remove battery, unplug power, hold power button for 60 seconds, turn on computer with power plug only, then shutdown, add battery and restart

If that fails to work, check that the charger indicator light is not flickering, this indicates that the power is not completing the circuit (damaged power capacitors/ fault on motherboard.

Are you using a genuine Toshiba charger, these laptops are prone to breaking down if an aftermarket one is used, a non-genuine one can damage the motherboard as well.

How many blinks does the caps lock make? Flashing caps lock is usually a sign that the Ram may be failing. You can try replacing the Ram modules to see if it boots, also, a dying hard drive will prevent booting, remove and see if that allows the laptop to power up

After that, I'd suspect the motherboard is damaged and will need replacing

Hi.

Even though HP laptop are very good and sylish they are prone to getting hot and after time the motherboards do fail.
I wouldn't buy a refurbished motherboard as you can run into the same problem again. If you want another motherboard for the laptop then I suggest that you buy a new one, however they can be quite expensive but that would depend on how much you like the laptop itself.

You could sell the laptop for parts which would go towards another make of laptop.

Remove all of the ram, turn the laptop on if it does not beep you have a bad motherboard. If it beeps replace the memory and remove the hard drive turn on the laptop and see if it posts. If it posts without the hard drive then the hard drive is bad. Otherwise it is probably still a bad motherboard.

Look closely on the power, num lock, cap lock on your next power up.
ALL THREE will light up at the same time during the boot process.
THEY MUST lite up at the same time.
This is call POST.
NO POST will = a bad motherboard.
==== If they all lite up and no screen display then it is a back light,LCD or ribbon cable problem.
I recommend you start a CHAT session at Fixya.
I don't think you can get an answer by email/posting method.

Laptop not working

It's possible that the motherboard has a problem and needs replaced. However, usually when this type of thing happens, it's with the memory, battery, or hard drive. A failing memory chip or malfunctioning battery are the two main causes for this. You can check these yourself by; 1- removing the battery and starting with the power suppl only, 2- removing the memory and try starting with one chip at a time, 3- remove the hard drive and see if the machine will go to the initial display screen. If these three don't work, then I'm afraid the problem is with the motherboard and it will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, HP has the most fragile and rather pricey motherboards on the market, so the problem may very well be with the board. If it is, take into consideration the cost of the repair and the cost of a new machine, it may be time for a new laptop.
