Initializing means that the printer is starting up and getting all functions ready such as fax, print engine, scanner. If your printer is freezing with just initializing on the screen then there is a problem. If you have added any extra memory to the printer remove and try to restart. Most common failure is the formatter itself.

I've just got this problem after a powercut, whilst it was not being used but on. If you have only had it a few months send it in warranty. Think I will have to take this apart and see if the scanner cable/ribbon/drive belt is caught on something or been stretched too much and can be replaced at all. Its like at one end its caught and wont move the scanning head being stuck somehow, caught on something (doubtful tho').
Scanner failure means that the scanner bulb is no longer working. There are a few things that can sometimes bring it back but it may be a permanent issue.
1) Make sure printer is directly into the wall and not a surge protector or power strip
2) Remove cartridges from printer
3) Unplug power from back of printer and wait 30 seconds
4) While printer is unplugged press the # and 6 keys and plug power cord in. Keep holding # and 6 until the printer has either powered off or it says semi-full reset
5) Go through initialization process - if it works great the issue with firmware is fixed. If not then the scanner bulb isn't functioning and you are looking at replacing the unit.
Remove both the ink cartridges from the All-In-One. Unplug the power cord from the All-In-One as well as the power outlet. Now move the carriage (carriage is the one which holds the cartridge) Too and Fro till you feel the carriage is moving smoothly.(You can apply little more pressure if it does not move easily) Then insert the cartridges close the access door. Plug the power cord directly to a wall outlet without surg protector.(If possible connect it to a different power outlet) Before connecting the power cord to the All-In-One press and hold the # and no 6 button and then insert the power cord, do not release the keys until you see a message a reset (if the screen goes blank then release the keys and turn the power on) Now try printing a test page or make a copy
If it still makes a loud noise and the message comes up as scanner failure, then either the scanner or the scanner machanisum is bad, you may have to replace the unit
MOST HP PRINTERS HAVE A DOOR ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE PRINTER THAT CAN BE OPENED TO REMOVE A PAPER JAM. HAVE YOU TRIED USING THIS TO CLEAN THE PAPER JAM. THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING STUCK IN THE PAPER PATH THAT IS CAUSING THE JAMS. CHECK THE WHOLE PAPER PATH FROM THIS REAR ACCESS DOOR. OK?
