Question about Canon Digital Cameras

2 Answers

I have a Cannon 40D 28-135mm lens. With the lens in auto focus, the lens will act as if it has found the target will focus, beep, ready to shoot. The lens then makes a focusing sound and moves just a little. This is on a stationary target with camera on tripot. Whats wrong?

What you can do is to get another sample, so see if that one focuses better in combination with your 40D.
What you can also do is to let Canon calibrate your 40D with both of your lenses.

Achieving focus is a task of both the lens ( the lens electronics decide on the steps the motor has to take, everytime the camera asks for a new "sample") and the camera (which is the one that judges the sample on focus by determining an increase or decrease in the contrast in the subject). So calibrating both the lenses and camera to work well together can increase AF performance a lot. Hope that helps......

Does the camera still work even thought it does a small extra adjustment?

Are your pictures fine and is the camera working ok otherwise?

If your pictures are good then theres noting to worry about.

if on the other hand you can't take pictures, try reseting the camera, there should be a small reset hole in it.

Canon 40D will no longer work if on auto focus. Will only take a picture in manual focus.

When in auto focus does the lens try to focus?
Sounds like your lens is the problem, you can try to clean the gold contacts on both the camera and on the lens with a pencil eraser (Make sure not to get any eraser dust in either the camera or the lens). If you can try a different lens on your camera and see if that one will work.
Please post a comment if you need more help on this.

All of a sudden every picture I take with the 55-200 zoom lens is blurry and slightly out of focus. Pictures with the 18-55 lens are still sharp. I have been using that 55-200 lens for years for sports...

Simplest answer is that you may have accidentally flipped the focus switch (A/M) on the lens to M. This turns off autofocus for that lens (which you might need to do if autofocus just can't resolve the image). Try turning it back to A.

Another possibility is that you're using an autofocus target different from the one you're expecting. The problem would be apparent regardless of lens choice, by being in focus in a different part of the image. You can press the arrow keys (while holding shutter release down halfway) to change AF targets, or change a menu setting to simply choose the closest target.

The shooting modes have no effect on focusing ability.

The camera would likely detect other focus-related problems (like servo failure).

Will not release shutter on canon 40D

Cannon is notorious for their auto focus and automatic setting to be very discriminant. If you are to close to your subject while in these settings granted your strobe will fire and your flash may flip into position but the shutter just wont work. Cannon is trying to tell you you are too close. You need to back up. If you are trying to get that close up and don't have the proper lens that's all you are going to get.
It is best to go long lens then go for your close up.

Lost autofocus on 40D when using ST-E2 and 2 580EX

Try taking the battery out and putting it back in. If that doesn't work try cleaning the len's contact sesnors with a pencil eraser.

Auto focus not working

The lens AF mode is not working. What lens is it you are using?

It is not a camera issue but a lens issue. Try a different lens to be certain.

Canon EOS 40D not working when turned on

I'm sorry to tell you this but you do NOT have anything set wrong. To test my theory turn your camera to full auto. Next make sure your switch on the lens is set to auto. Then just try taking some shots of some objects across the room. If that doesn't allow you to take pictures do the exact same test with a different lens. That way you've taken the lens out of the equation. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer but I'm pretty sure you'll need to return the camera to cannon.

Canon eos 40d Soft image on playback screen

I think this might be a firmware issue.www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17779#DownloadDetailAct
Here is a link to Canon's website for your 40D there you will find the latest firmware version for your camera. Version 2.0.0 which includes 1.0.8 . In 1.0.8 item #3 in the list of changes it states repairs a phenomenon where reviewed images appear unnatural.

Hi,
Prepare to Live view shooting:
1. Set the lens focus mode (on the side of the lens) switch to <MF>
2. Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode
3. In menu under the settings tab, select Live View function settings and then press <SET>
4. Turn with quick control dial to select Live View shoot and press <SET>
5. Turn with the control dial to select Enable and press <SET>

With the camera ready to shoot, press <SET> - image will appear on the screen in real-time

I hope this answered your question
