Question about Carrier Heating & Cooling

Open Question

I have a Carrier Synergy 2000 38tda048300 4 ton/2 ton unit it is a 2 speed unit. It is 8 and a half years old. The unit keeps running on the inside but the fan stops and the outside unit stops. Seems to be the same time daily. AC man came and said it was the compressor. We got a new compressor. The very next day it did the same thing. The only way to make it start again is to flip the switch leave it off for 15 or so min and restart. This was exactly what happened prior to replacing the compressor. Any suggestions I'm gettting tired of the ac man.

The high side/low side pressure equalization you describe is normal for a compressor sitting idle.

If you have an ohm meter you can check the compressor windings for opens and shorts. If your compressor is 3 phase as you state (this would be very unusual for a residential unit) you should have continuity across all 3 phases and no continuity to ground. Take the compressor out of the circuit before you check.

If the compressor does have crankcase heat, it should have been left on for at least 24 hours before starting the unit. Another cause for failure could be overcharging which could have resulted in refrigerant slugging back to the compressor.

Does the unit have any low or high pressure control safeties? If so, check them too - some have resets. You said the condenser fan ran so it's not likely the breaker blew, but check anyway and also check to make sure you have available power on all 3 phases.

eventually,cycling process is doing done if the thermostat sense the configure temperayure set up it will trigger to stop your compressor motor as well as the blower fan,blower fan independenly to you compressor.if your thingking that your compressor is tripping off,check your operating current on one line using clamp ammeter and compare to the rated current that tag on
motor compressor body,if the current flow is higher than the rated current specified on compressor motor,well problem occured it will trip your compressor,because overload protector is becoming your thermostat.but if you got same current result it was cycling process.If tripping off maybe air is present in your system call qualified ac tech, to purge out air in system.

The fan motor is getting hot and going off on the internal overload in the motor.
This is caused by either a low voltage, a bad capacitor, or tight or dry bearings in the motor.
To check the bearings turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade if it spins freely then the bearings are ok.
To check the capacitor you will need some kind of
tester or you can buy a capacitor and replace it, that's what a lot of people do. They usually don't cost very much.
To check the voltage you will need a voltmeter and measure the volts at the unit.

Capacitor, dirty condencer coil causing the motor amps to run too high. But most likely worn bearing on blade side of motor causing it to pull to one side causing it to over heat and shut down. Sleve bearings should have no side play.

be aware that not repairing this asap that you are causing yourself more problems First I would change out the fan capacitor and see if this could be the problem. Secondly if the capacitor isn,t the problem change out the motor . By continuing to allow the system to cycle like this the compressor will take a dive on you costing more . Good Luck

Pa12NA048-d. How many tons is this unit? It's 7 years old and went out. Needs replacing.


Hi, the tonnage is a 4 ton unit. It says in the model number, the 048. There is 12,000 btu's per ton of cooling. So, on your unit 4x12=48= a 4 ton unit.

What ton is this carrier condenser unit


Over here in my neck of the woods an apartment one bedroom would have a 1.5 ton unit, a 2 bedroom house 2 to 2.5 tons a 3 or 4 bedroom home would be a 3 ton or 3.5 ton. Without numbers no one can tell exactly what you have there. Figured i could give you an idea. If you have 8 foot walls go by a ton for each bed room in the house.

This is a 3 and 1/2 ton unit.
The 042 in the model number is the tonnage of your carrier unit.
AC tonnage is based on 12,000 btu per ton.
12,000.....1 ton
18,000.....1 and 1/2 ton
24,000.....2 ton
30,000.....2 and 1/2 ton
36,000.....3 ton
42,000.....3 and 1/2 ton
48,000.....4 ton
60,000.....5 ton.
There is no 4 and 1/2 ton unit.

I have an 8 year old 2 1/2 ton carrier compressor unit. I have already replaced the running coil and contactor. I now want to clean the coils and fan blades on the motor. I have never had reason to remove...


Hey Bernie, it is possible to remove the 4 screws on the grill that the motor is mounted to (not the bolts holding the motor to the grill)and pull up and twist so its upside down and have someone else hold it as to not put to much stress on the wires also be carefull not to put stress on the fan blade they are easily bent and will throw it out of balance and cause vibration. make sure the power is off to the unit and do not use high pressure because it can damage the fins. hose pressure is all you need.

Coil leaking freon on the inside unit. Estimate is $2,100!


If indeed your evaporator (indoor) coil is leaking, the best option IS replace it (it may not even BE repairable). If you live in the USA and your furnace is getting old, a new ultra high efficient SYSTEM that qualifies for the tax credit would probably be a better option (Obama will pay 30%).

The heat pump model number shows that it is a two and a half ton unit. I am sorry but I am not familiar with the air handler model number.

Carrier air handler tonnage?


That is a fairly large difference. It is usually ok to have the inside evap. coil and blower up to 1 ton larger than the outside condenser. That will make the unit slightly more efficient as well as less likely to freeze up on low airflow situations. It is not recommended to install a new condenser on an old evap coil. There has been a lot of changes to the design of the coils in the last little while. For example a 10 year old 2 ton coil may only have 3 cubic feet of volume but a new 2 ton coil may have 4 cubit feet of volume.

There are many factors that may have infulenced the decision on what size condenser to install. Many of which can only be done by visiting the home and doing alot of work, checking the duct sizing bioth supply and return, inspecting the insulation and windows of the home etc. etc. Most of the time that never gets done. You can blame the contractor for not doing a complete check, but at the same time you can blame the customer because many contractors that are that good loose the job to a cheaper bid that did not no any of the research. It is a catch 22 for everyone involved.

There is ALOT more to sizing equipment that many people think, sadly that also includes many HVAC contractors. Way too many people use "rule of thumbs" or flat out "guess".

Sorry for the rant but your queston can only be answered by a good well educated HVAC contractor visiting your home. That type of a contractor is getting hard to find these days in such a price competetive world.

In Dec 07 I had a complete Carrier AC/Gas Heating System installed in my home to replace my original system when my house was built in 1983.We upgraded the new system to 3-TON AC as the old AC was 2 and...


Air conditioning requires 400 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per ton of cooling so your old 2.5 ton system would have required 1000 cfm and your new 3 ton requires 1200 cfm. This is not a big change, but if your ductwork is too small it could cause problems. The best way to check to see if airflow is the problem is to check the temperature of the air going in to the system and then check it when it comes out. Take a temp reading with a reliable digital thermometer at the return grill ( the vent that is physically the closest to the furnace that is sucking air in). Then take a temperature reading at the vent that is physically closest to the furnace and that is blowing air out. The target range is for the air coming out to be 18-22 deg F colder that the air going in. If the air is coming out is more than 22 deg colder then there is not enough air moving through the system. If the air is coming out is less than 18 deg colder then the problem is with the system. Potential problems range from improper refrigerant charge or incorrect refrigerant metering to wrong coil/volume ratio which is essentially mis-matched equipment. It sounds to me like you have a company that doesn't really have much of a clue what they are doing. When the company I work for changes equipment in a house to a larger capacity, we always check the ductwork and do the math ahead of time to make sure that things will work rather that throwing things at problems later. Also, when you check your temps turn the system on and allow it to run for about 10-15 min first so that everything has a chance to stabilize and the ductwork has a chance to cool down.
