Install the sound device again,
check if the original is present in the device manager and if not try start,
control panel,
add remove software,
(let it build the list of installed softwares and check if audio rack or audio softwares are installed here)
should be Realtek AC97.
Uninstall it if its in this list and reboot.
Go back into device manager and update the audio device reinstall Realtek AC97 and reboot again.
All done ,now lets try a file with sound again.
Can find the softwares on the Acer Recovery disks or www.acer.com/downloads

Is this a sound problem with Windows Media Player 9? If so, I found a thread online which should be of some help. The solution from that site is as follows:
"One thing comes to mind. Open WMP, go to Tools, Options, Devices and wait till the window populates. Then highlight Speakers and click the Properties button.
Where it says, "Audio Device to Use", try changing to "Default Direct Sound Device". If that is already chosen, choose your soundcard from the dropdown list."

For the full thread, go here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/16782-windows-media-player-9-0xc00d11ba-cannot-play-file.html

Loss of volume

Hi,

About 6 months ago I had to wipe my hard drive clean and then reinstall all disks for my Dell Dimension 4500 system. Ever since then, there has been no sound for emails, music, Start-up and Logging off etc...etc.

When trying to play a cd for instance, or anything requiring sound, the following message appears:

There are no other programs running and I have repeatedly gone to control panel and gone through all the Windows sound trouble shooting suggestions regarding sound devices. All wire connections have been checked and there was no change in regard to the plug-in areas.

Everything worked great soundwise prior to re-installation, no wires or connection locations were changed, and no one else has used my computer so I have ruled out any accident by another person.

Please call me or email me at l.bassing@att.net, Phone is 551-497-2795 to help me while at my computer. It will be so much appreciated. This problem has been driving me crazy for too long.

Thanks so much for your prompt attention and looking foward to speaking to a tech repair adviser asap.

Sincerely,
Lauré Bassing

Sound Card

you may need to access the computer's manufacturer website to download the sound drivers. another way you could try is to click Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc and hit <Enter> to open device manager

go to the Sound section and expand it --- then highlight the device and right click and then select Update Driver.
