This is not a solution to your problem; but i can assure you that chapters do burn on my Sony Multi-Function DVD Recorder VRD-MC5. And, on viewing via a DVD player, work well.

Step 3: Set up the conversion parameters
Click the To DVD button on the main panel. In the list of video disc types (Profile) select one of the preset profiles.

Click the Browse... button next to the Output File Name field and select a location on your HDD for the output video file.
Note: when you select a location for your output video file, you should save the file to your personal computer HDD.

Step 5: Create a menu for burning DVD
In case you convert your files into a DVD format, the program will let you create a DVD menu so that you could navigate through your disc easily using it. First of all you need to put the markers indicating the beginning of the chapters of your DVD menu. To do it switch into the editing mode using the Edit button on the AVS Video Converter main panel. The following window will be opened:

You can move the marker by dragging it along the Timeline, add a new one or delete them using the appropriate button.
After you add all the chapters and when you are satisfied with the result, close the Menu Editor window and start converting your video.

Step 7: Burning DVD onto a disc
Insert a blank DVD into your computer optical disc drive. Make sure that the disc is compatible with your drive.

You can select the necessary disc drive if you have several, refresh it and mark the Verify disc check-box to make sure the disc is recorded correctly.

burning-dvd-7.png
Now click the Start burning! button to begin the recording. Note, that if the disc is not empty you will be offered to erase it. If you do not want to do that, you can eject the disc and use another one instead.
After the burning dvd is over the disc will be ejected automatically. Note, if you checked the Verify disc, the recording will take a little longer depending on the size of the output files as the program will need time to verify them.
Now you can watch your recorded home video DVD on your Home DVD Player!

How do you get a rewritable dvd disc to work when adding another movie to it?

You cannot do this without re-authoring the VOB files in a video editor. The reason is that one of the VOB files is an index file that tells the DVD logic chip what to say on the screen. When you reauthor, you get to change that file. In a nutshell, use a video editor to create two single files of the two movies, then import each of them into the video software - say Power Producer or something like that, Create a startup page in the program and have each movie as a chapter, or individual chapter each movie in 10 minute increments inside a folder that gets selected by the menu. This is a lot to absorb but this is how.

When i go to make movie mode a panel comes up which readsas follows "cannot create disc because the selected menu has no links"

Studio error: Cannot create disc because the selected menu has no links
This error will occur if a menu has been added to the project, but links to chapters have not been properly set. It is not enough to just add a menu to a project; it is also required to have at least one point in the project associated with the menu.
When adding a menu to a project, you will be prompted to let Studio create chapters automatically or you can choose to create chapters manually. If you choose to have Studio create the chapters automatically it will always add at least one chapter and this error should never occur. If you choose to add chapters manually, it is then required to add at least one chapter. Here are basic instructions to accomplish this.
  1. Double-click on the menu in the timeline to bring up the Menu Properties.
  2. Select that video clip in the timeline that you would like to link to the menu.
  3. Right-click on the video clip in the timeline and select "Set Disc Chapter."
  4. Alternately you can drag the clip to the button in the menu displayed in the Menu Properties window.
For additional information on creating menus, please see the Disc Menus section of the Help file by going to Help -> Help Topics in Studio.
