Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS Router (e125894)

1 Answer

Firmware will not update

I've got the blinking power light which supposedly indicates that the firmware crapped out and needs to be updated. Hooking directly into the modem, I've been able to download the update and the Linksys software to update the firmware. I reset the router and plug directly into it. The IP Address will default to the standard 192.168.1.1, but after less than 30 seconds, it will change itself to a different IP address. I cannot figure this out. Even when using the new IP Address, the Linksys firmware update software cannot connect to the router to update.

A completely different one, typically some slight deviation from the IP address I had when hooked directly into the modem.

I finally called Linksys, and after a few hours, they said to send it back to them. Hopefully sometime in the next few weeks, I'll have a working router again. I will say that I've had much worse customer service experiences, although their's was nothing to brag about.

You said that after 30 seconds of having an IP of 192.168.1.x, what IP address does it change to?

What to do when security light is orange?

Reboot
  • The most basic way to attempt to fix a router problem is to reboot the device. This is accomplished by unplugging the powericon1.png cord, waiting for a minute and then plugging the power connector back in. If the orange light continues to blink, you will have to update its firmware.
Download New Firmware
  • Even though the wireless router is malfunctioning, downloading new firmware is possible by disconnecting the malfunctioning Linksys device from the Internet connection in the wall, then using that jack to plug your machine directly to the Internet. If this is not possible, use another computericon1.png that can connect to the Internet. You can download a firmware update directly from Linksys (see Resources).
Install New Firmware
  • Once you have the firmware update available on the computer affected by the malfunctioning router, open the file and follow the instructions to upgrade the devices firmware.

Power light on the router is Blinking very Fast

I have the same problem after doing a firmware update. I did figure out the slow blinking power light means it is in recovery mode and you need to load firmware using the "recovery tool" from Asus' website. I tried loading the newest firmware, the same firmware I had before the problem and the original firmware (all found on Asus' site), but nothing worked.
Did you ever find an answer?

1. Reset the router to factory settings.

- Before you reset the router, unplug all the cables attached to it except the power cord.

- Make sure the router is plugged into the power outlet, then hold down the reset button at

the back of the router for 30 seconds using a paper clip or a pen. You should see the lights flicker momentarily on the front panel of the router.

2. Once the lights are stable, connect 1 computer or laptop directly to the back of the

router(LAN ports usually they are labeled by numbers and have the same color, just pick one).

If you pick number 1, check the corresponding light indicator at the front panel of the

router, make sure light 1 is also lit up if not choose another port at the back of the router.

3. access the router's setup page by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 in the

address field of your browser and then press Enter. Type admin for the router user name and your password (or the default, password). Setup and configure the router again.

4. If you notice the connection is not stable or the lights on the router are still not

displaying correctly, you may update or reload the same firmware(program or software) on the

router. You may download the updated firmware from http://support.netgear.com , just type the

model of your router, choose the version, press enter then click on Downloads, you should see

the firmware available for your router. Make sure to use wired connection when updating the

firmware.

I have a WRTU54G-TM router that after saving settings changes now blinks the power light endlessly. Depressing and holding the reset for over 30 seconds has no effect, power light continues to blink...

Probably can't be saved. The only thing you could is update the firmware since it looks like you can get to the web interface. Pressing the "update" button when updating is different than hitting the "save" link when changing settings. If there is no newer firmware available, you should be able to downgrade it to an older version.

After updating firmware, power light is blinking

Is the router settings menu 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 available from internet explorer? The factory user password should be admin. If you cannot get the router menu to come up the firmware may have been corrupted. Hopefully you can get to the menu or try and re-install the firmware.

Lost power While updating firmware and now router does not work

If the firmware update was interrupted, the router may be "bricked", meaning it has corrupted files and will not be able to function as it should. You should call NetGear support and see what they suggest, since you probably won't have the tools necessary to restore the firmware.

Status light is red

Hi, Based on your post/description, the Siemens AP/Router is at fault. This could have been brought about by lightning, power surge, plain hardware failure or system/software error. The red status light - on indicates an error (on the firmware)(blinking during start-up or when firmware is being downloaded/updated); WAN light blinking green - data transmission to/from your ISP (it is also possible that the router is trying to download corrective software or firmware update). Suggest you let it run for sometime just in case it is really downloading/upgrading firmware. If full reset of the router doesn't correct the problem, you may have to replace the unit. Good luck and kind regards.
