Black image When scanning a doc, I get a black image the is the exact size of the glass cover plate. No image of doc can be visualized. What do you suggest? Is it worth repairing? Don't use the scanner that much. Am surprised I am having problems. Thanks, Mikee

Trying an alternate USB cable did not fix the problem for me. Still looking for any assistance and I just posted my problem without having seen this.

I have been using my HP5500C scanner for several years without problem except for the ADF which sucks. It just started producing dark scans. I found this site, but it does not seem to have answers, just folks in the same boat as me.

Black or nearly black scans--I noticed also that the clear plastic
"glass bed" you put the doc on is fogged on the inside. Opened
the unit up and found that one of the scanning bulbs was not
working. Don't know if the other is working to full brightness,
but looked like it was. Tried to disconnect the non-working one
but found the end conectors seemed to be fused on.

Believe problem is that not enough light to produce an image.
Need to replace the bulb unit. Suspect not cost effective, but
don't know yet--source for DIY parts?

I have an HP 5470c flatbed scanner. It started with partially black scans, and progressed finally to completely black pages. Tried here for answers. Found none. So I opened up my scanner, figured I had nothing to lose. Thought it might be the ribbon cable attached to the moveable tray. Was RIGHT!! Immediately saw a small frayed piece where it was rubbing against the tray. Used some Scotch Long Lasting Tape to re-connect. EUREKA. Problem fixed!!

If you have another USB cable you could try that.

Bizhub C652 has horizontal lines.

its important to find out whether the \'lines\' are in scan direction/ or only through Radf or only from scan glass,

if the lines are only showing when documents are fed throught the Radf, then the problem lies with the document scan plate( left of the main glass platen (about 2" in width)) or with the scan plate blade cleaner

if the lines ONLY appear when copying from the Glass then the issue lies within the optics (probably nothing more than a clean will be needed)

another question would be to ask if the lines are solid (black line overprinting image) or if they are \'missing\' lines where the image has failed to copy, sometimes it can be hard to work out which side the fault lies,so try shaded greys as a copy original .

if the scan lines are appearing on both Radf and Glassplatten ,mode then the issue may be dirty optics/ccd sensor or it could e an indication of the ccd failing or image control pwb in error while interpreting the image file.

what to do

1) place a grey sheet of paper in the Radf and have the copier photocopy both sides of the original and print to single sided sheets ( so the printer turns the original over to complete the task)

observe the result.

2) have the copier photocopy directly from the platten glass- single sided.

observe the result.

ckeck to see if the error has appeared on both sets of prints ,

if the error has only appeared in the first set of prints then the issue may be a tiny DOT on the slit glass (left of platten) - a dot on this glass will indeed appear as a Line as the original is scanned across the glass.

hhope thhis helps

I have connected the TMA to my hp scanjet and I have put a slide in it, but when I scan it, all I get is a scan of the whole glass and the slide is black.

When scanning slides and negatives the scanner lid lights up so light passes through the slides and negatives and the image is picked up by the sensor.
If the image of the whole glass is black then most likely the lamp in the lid is faulty.

I HAVE A BLACK LINE ON ALL MY SCANNED COPIES , EVEN ON PLAIN COPIERPAPER. PLEASE ADVISE

There are two possibilities: 1) The scanner sensor has a dead pixel, or 2) There is a particle covering a pixel of the linear scanning sensor array.

If you are up to it, open the scanner carefully and clean all the optics while you are at it. So the back of the glass cover, the mirrors (carefully!) and then the sensor. You may want to use a duster spray can (I think Office Max or Depot carry those) and dust of the sensor and the mirrors instead of using a soft cloth. If the scanner uses first surface mirrors, then one can very easily ruin the mirror coatings and it will be full of scratches from the dust particles when you wipe them! If they use regular mirrors (where the reflective coating is behind the glass) then it is safe to use a cloth.

If that does not get rid of the black line, then you have a dead pixel in your scanner sensor and you need to buy a new one.

There may be a way to tell whether it is a dead pixel or a dirt particle on the sensor. If you open your scanned image (or plain white paper image), magnify the image and see if the line is exactly one pixel wide - that would point to a dead pixel. If it is more than one pixel wide and the scanner did not do an interpolation then it is a dirty sensor. To make sure, scan with the maximum intrinsic resolution (chek the scanner's manual for that), so you don't interpolate between pixels. I am still not sure if that also applies to color scanners, they have a color filter over the linear detector array. It may depend on how the pixels for the color coding are arranged. But then I would expect an 'off-color' line, not a black line. If it is a black line and if it is more than one pixel wide, I am sure that a dust particle is the reason for it.

Good luck, Stephan

I clean the glass but there are still black streaks

Try scanning the same document in two diff brightness levels (in B&W, say one at 75 and other at say 210. I am assuming you are using CapturePerfect. If the black streaks are same in both the images, then it could be scan module problem. If the streaks vary in size, then it is definitely dirt on the glass. use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to clean the glass. DONT USE solvents. S. Mohan, Chennai, India

How do you open case to clean inside of glass

Lock the carriage first! Remove the two medium-sized Phillips screws under the hinge and the small one over the small plastic cover plate. Remove that cover plate. Slide the top tray (glass and cover) off the frame by pulling laterally in the direction of the hinge. It will snap out if you work on it. Clean the glass. Slide tray back in and seat it securely. Put the large screws in to hold the carriage. You won't be able to screw them in if the cover isn't seated right. Now make sure the 5-conductor ribbon cable that is under the small plastic cover plate gets stuck back in the socket. You just push it into the tiny black socket. I think that tells the scanner what's going on with the cover. Then reinstall the cover plate. Now you should be good to go! Don't forget to unlock the carriage.

Canon DR-5010C when settings are changed to Auto Detection for page size gets an error message stating that "Scanning parameters are incorrect." I want to be able to scan stacks of paper of various sizes....

If you are using CapturePerfect 3, select page size as Auto-detection, detect size by Image width, Deskew by roller & Image, then you will get images exactly as that of the scanned image.
If you ae using CP2, then you can select Auto-detection AND page detection. The problem with CP2 is if the image is less than that of the guide-plate, you will get black background. You can clean this through software.
If you had select B&W scanning and chosen to save file in JPG format, the scanner will report error. JPG is only for Color/ Grey scale.
With CP2, I have observed that sometimes, the changes are not retained, unless you select 'default' first and alter the parameters. This is not found in CP3.

Scanning documents for report cards

It will scan pdfs but you would need adobe professional to add the data for each student. It cannot scan a document and make it into a Word doc because this is essentially an image scanner and .doc files, etc. have more complex embedded information that cannot be captured by a scanner because that information is not visually present (i.e. exact font size, type, formulas, etc.). You'll have to find some other way- sorry!

How to get rid of a black strip (1") on the leading edge of scanned documents?

You must be using Auto contrast/brightness. Change to manual, try one or two scans changing the brightness tab moving left or right and choose desire output quality. Remember the settings for that set of documents. The brightness will vary depending upon data (foreground) and noise (background). For a different set of docs you may need to adjust the settings slightly.
