Black image When scanning a doc, I get a black image the is the exact size of the glass cover plate. No image of doc can be visualized. What do you suggest? Is it worth repairing? Don't use the scanner that much. Am surprised I am having problems. Thanks, Mikee

Trying an alternate USB cable did not fix the problem for me. Still looking for any assistance and I just posted my problem without having seen this.

I have been using my HP5500C scanner for several years without problem except for the ADF which sucks. It just started producing dark scans. I found this site, but it does not seem to have answers, just folks in the same boat as me.

Black or nearly black scans--I noticed also that the clear plastic
"glass bed" you put the doc on is fogged on the inside. Opened
the unit up and found that one of the scanning bulbs was not
working. Don't know if the other is working to full brightness,
but looked like it was. Tried to disconnect the non-working one
but found the end conectors seemed to be fused on.

Believe problem is that not enough light to produce an image.
Need to replace the bulb unit. Suspect not cost effective, but
don't know yet--source for DIY parts?

I have an HP 5470c flatbed scanner. It started with partially black scans, and progressed finally to completely black pages. Tried here for answers. Found none. So I opened up my scanner, figured I had nothing to lose. Thought it might be the ribbon cable attached to the moveable tray. Was RIGHT!! Immediately saw a small frayed piece where it was rubbing against the tray. Used some Scotch Long Lasting Tape to re-connect. EUREKA. Problem fixed!!

If you have another USB cable you could try that.

We have a Canon Image Class MF5900. When we put items through the feeder on the top of the machine to feed through for either copying or scanning we get the copies/scans but they also have line through...

Yes, this machine has what the call a scanning glass. Its the small thin glass where the paper goes down through the doc feed.its on this glass. A real close visual or take a clean piece of paper. Wad it up a and clean glass with that paper. It works. But if you don't have a line when you print or from the platin.(glass,main).its on that reader glass.

How do you scan?

Open the Applications folder on the hard disk on which MP Navigator is installed, then open the Canon Utilities folder and double-click the navicon.gif MP Navigator 3.0 icon. MP Navigator opens.
2. Point to Scan/Import and click 'Photos/Documents (Platen)'.
macnavscanfirst.gif
3. Place the document face-down on the platen glass, and select 'Document Type'.
How to place the document and Document Type depends on the document to be scanned.
navscandocwindow.gif
How to place the document
Allow 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen glass and the document.
Align a corner of the document with the corner at the arrow of the platen.
macnavscanselectdoctype.gif
  • When you select Color Photo or Black and White Photo, the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly if you do not leave 3/8 inches (1 cm) or more space between the edges of the platen glass and the document.
  • When you select Color Photo or Black and White Photo, the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, select Document Size such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned.
  • When you select Magazine(Color), the Descreen function will be enabled and scanning takes longer than usual. To reset the Descreen function, disable Descreen in the Scan Settings dialog box.

4. Click 'Specify'... and set the preferences as required.
The Scan Settings Dialog Box opens. Specify the Document Size and Scanning Resolution.
macnavscanscanset.gif
  • When Document Size is Auto Detect or Auto Detect(Multiple Documents), the position or size of the image may not be scanned correctly depending on the document. In such a case, select Document Size, such as A4 or Letter according to the document to be scanned.
5. Click 'Scan'.
Scanning will begin.
When the document has been scanned, the scanned image is displayed in the Thumbnail List area.

Canon DR-5010C when settings are changed to Auto Detection for page size gets an error message stating that "Scanning parameters are incorrect." I want to be able to scan stacks of paper of various sizes....

If you are using CapturePerfect 3, select page size as Auto-detection, detect size by Image width, Deskew by roller & Image, then you will get images exactly as that of the scanned image.
If you ae using CP2, then you can select Auto-detection AND page detection. The problem with CP2 is if the image is less than that of the guide-plate, you will get black background. You can clean this through software.
If you had select B&W scanning and chosen to save file in JPG format, the scanner will report error. JPG is only for Color/ Grey scale.
With CP2, I have observed that sometimes, the changes are not retained, unless you select 'default' first and alter the parameters. This is not found in CP3.

Lexmark x4270 black streaks on scanned images.

There is something on your scanner glass; oftentimes, this happens when you use white-out on a document and then scan it. You will have to open the cover to access the scan plate-it should look something like a simple piece of glass maybe an inch wide. Use rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner to clean the glass plate-DO NOT spray on the plate, spray LIGHTLY on the cloth or tissue-use something soft that will not scratch the glass-and use that to clean the glass plate. You may have to do this several times to remove the foreign matter from the plate, testing between cleanings until you get a scan that is clean.

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

Scanning documents for report cards

It will scan pdfs but you would need adobe professional to add the data for each student. It cannot scan a document and make it into a Word doc because this is essentially an image scanner and .doc files, etc. have more complex embedded information that cannot be captured by a scanner because that information is not visually present (i.e. exact font size, type, formulas, etc.). You'll have to find some other way- sorry!

HP Officejet 6300 All-in-one machine makes black streaks

The problem is that that there a small piece of glass that the doc feeder use's to scan the orginal. You will have to clean the small glass it's about a half of a inch piece and is normally under the doc feeder unit. It will either be to the right side of the main copy board glass or it is under the doc feed unit where the paper goes down through the feeder. It is mostly some white out on the glass, just clean with a dam cloth with water or windex..... Good Luck

SC101 ERROR MESSAGE

I'm not familiar with your exact model but for small ricohs....Sc101 means that the standard white level was not detected. When you first turn on your machine the scanner scans a white plate (you will find this plate under the glass or frame near the park position of the scanner (facing down towards the scanner). The scanner will try to take a quick scan of this white plate so it knows the difference between white and black.
You will get this error if anything is preventing the scanner from seeing this plate (exposure lamp not working, Blocked scanner, or more likely a dirty white plate.
Remove the glass, get a mirror and try to find the plate and then clean it with windex. When you turn on machine the scanner will try to scan this white plate( make sure scanner is not getting hung up on anything.
For original size your machine may use paper size sensors that look like small black boxes with two black eyes (under the glass looking up towards the original) make sure these eyes are clean.

Regarding your doc feeder I need more info ( does it attempt to work, etc) describe what it does when you try to use it.
