Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive Logo
Anonymous Posted on Dec 22, 2010

My 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Go (bought a month ago) was fine until yesterday when I accidentally dropped it (it was in my small bag all the time). Ever since then, it has this faint noise and the light flashes after a few seconds. I just hope I don't lose any data or media in there, but if anyone willing to tell me what happened to it, I might just find an answer to fix this problem.

One of the problems with Disk Drives is their propensity to fail due to manual shock. I suspect that the shock caused the read/write heads to break or misalign causing the noise when power is applied to the drive. As you know those heads fly about 2 microns above the platters supported by the air flow generated by the spin. When the drive is turned off the heads are auto retracted to the center of the disk where they come to rest as the disk spins down. If the disk is dropped from more than a foot, the heads strike the disk and bounce. If the heads are not active, they may bend or **** to the left or right. When you activate the drive, the heads may scrape the surface causing more damage. There are recovery businesses out there that charge a lot for their services. What they have to do is take your drive apart and install the platter(s) in another good like drive and try and write the data else where.

If the data is important, then a good rule of thumb is to always have two sources, such as two like drives and write the data to the two drives just in case.

I bought my drive about two years ago. The drive worked for two weeks and then failed, no recognition, the drive would not spin up. Ran the maxtore Max Blast software that came with the drive. The software examined the disk drive and kicked off an error code number and said to contact Maxtor. The internet site sent me a return product memorandum which I printed out and sent the drive back to Maxtor. They sent me a new drive. Cost me ten bucks to ship it. I think the warranty is 1 year. Also Maxtor was bought up by Seagate. If your drive is less than 1 year old, you may want to do the same.

Seagate freeagent 500gb not getting powered

is the power frequency different out in india, it's not just the voltages you have to watch!

If you can remove the hard drives and use a usb interface to connect them then software like filescavanger will recover files providing the hard spins up ok.

I purchased a 500GB Seagate external desktop drive about 2 months ago to use it with my mac. I had about half of the capacity used, and today noticed that at least 40GB of avi files is missing. They were...

the easiest option is to fragment your hard drive and try to add it on a different computer to check if it has any errors incurring on it. run disk check utility. if that does not work too, better consult the outlet you bought it from and ask for a warantee if it still has.

get back to me if that did not work and we could try to find other alternatives.

thank you

Seagate Freeagent Dropped

Unfortunately what you are describing is a damaged platter inside the hard drive. You may be able to get a technician to recover some data but generally this means the drive is gone forever.

Hard Drive Dropped

Turn off your computer and then plug in the FreeAgent external drive. Then try turning your computer on, it should read.  If it doesn't I would go to the Seagate website for troubleshooting.

Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive 500GB not recognising directory tree

Its the rubbish software that Seagate have bundled with their drive which will not allow you to backup the system folders. Solution is to use another backup utility, a google search will quickly locate numerous FREE software products which will alow you to copy anything. Unfortunately when you start googling about this drive you may be quite distressed about your purchase, as i have been :( Problems lay ahead with this drive due to inadequate cooling.....

Problem getting CPU to recognize Seagate

It is with the Free Agent, as I also have one. What I found on mine was that the interface electronics in the bottom run too hot and start to fail in various ways. If I unplugged the power supply for an hour, then the drive would work for a while. So I put it on it's side and directed a small fan at the bottom and now it works for weeks at a time. So it's a thermal problem with the interface electronics. I've heard that some folk just bought a different housing and put the drive into it.

Hope that helps...
