Hi. If you have Windows Xp. if you have Installation disk. load the disk. But if you not have, just connect and it's gonna be detected for Windows, If need drivers, windows will let you know, you need to go online, to get them.

If you have Windows Vista. just connect, and gonna install itself.
And you will see the message your hardware is installed and ready to work.

If you have a USB or Firewire cable you can just plug it into the USB port or firewire port in your computer and plug the power cord in if you have one and it should start recognizing it.

Verbatim 1tb external hard drive turning on

Make sure the appropriate drivers are up to date:
http://www.verbatim.com/index/support.php?lang_id=1&cat=9&section=
Try different ports on your machine, reboot your machine, try connecting it to a different computer if possible.

Type in diskmgmt.msc into the search bar, and see if the drive shows up here at all. If it shows up, but doesn't have a drive letter right click and use the assign drive letter option.
Contact verbatim for a replacement cable.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps
