A quick remedy is to get a memory card reader. remove it from the camera then insert the card into the reader's slot. its fast and reliable. camera software and drivers get messed up really bad sometimes. its the drivers that gets screwed recognizing the camera when its plugged in.

oh by the way, have you tried plugging the USB plug to another port on your pc?

You can restart your computer whilist the camera is connected so that when computer starts it quickly reads the camera and can boot from it.

Problem downloading photos

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com )

You can download the software from Canon here.

I would suggest though, that you use a card reader instead of connecting the camera directly to the computer. It's faster and easier and doesn't require any extra software.

USB connection with the camera causes computer to crash.

Try using a different USB cable. The connections between cameras and computers usually are problematic. A card reader will allow you to download the pictures from the SD card, without problems and saving your camera's battery power supply
