Smeg Fridge light

I have only had my Smeg fridge for just over a year . After a few months I noticed the the area around the light inside the fridge was warm , with a time release camera it appeared that the light stayed on even when the door was closed. The bulb needed changing twice and now even with new bulbs the light is off all the time ,I notice you sell a repacement switch for the FAB 28 but is it easy for me to fit it myself ? I don;t want to make matters worse ,I have tried writting to Smeg but they have ignored my letter. If anyone could help I would be really grateful - delving into a dark fridge has hazards!!Thanks.

I have had my Smeg fridge freezer for a year and a half. I have changed the bulb 5 times in this time. now the light doesn't work at all and i cant work out why. When you look at where the bulb goes it look like there is nothing wrong with. I to have written to Smeg over three weeks ago and i am yet to get a reply.

I have had EXACTLY same problem with my Smeg...only 3 years old....at first light was 'tempamental' would go on or off at will now it is continually off.....I put a small round led light you can buy in most DIY stores even in 'pound' shops...it works by battery and just sits on the inside of top shelf and when I open fridge just press it on. There must be a 'Smeg' problem with this light as a lot of people have had the same problem.....I'm sure SMEG must know of this problem...it should be sorted by them FREE of CHARGE... The fridge costs enough,.

What you need to locate is the door switch mechanism for the fridge. These are normally located towards the top of the door and protrude so that when the door closes the switch is pushed in. To find out if you have a problem with the switch just press it when the door is open and the light should go off. The switch itself can appear in various forms either as a protruding rod or a curved plate which pushes upwards against the door side when it closes. If I could draw in this section it could be better explained. But if you look around the inside of the fridge on the side away from the door hinge then you should find something you can push. Sorry to be this vague. If you do need a replacement switch they are normally quite simple to change depending on where they are located, most are two screws, or just a push in type. Hope this has been of some help.

I have the same problem. My fridge is never cold because the light bulb won't turn off and it is about 1000 degrees.

The design is complete crap. The front side of the light fixture is supposed to be pushed in by the door closing, thereby turning off the light.

The problem? No part of the door or shelf is actually aligned to come in contact with the light. And the shelves are not adjustable.

I have had to slap a piece of tape over the fixture to hold it in the off position (as it is spring loaded.)

I also have a giant blister on my finger from accidentally brushing the bulb. Thanks Smeg! :P

Replacing a fridge thermostat of a Smeg FC40RX fridge freezer

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS METHOD UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND ELECTRICAL SAFETY. The thermostat is behind the cooling element at the back of the fridge compartment and it connected to the dial at the top front of the compartment that controls its temperature setting. Remove the front plate to access the switch and you will see the wiring that goes to the thermostat. Connect the two wires to the thermostat and if the fridge does not start the thermostat is faulty. Replacements are available, but you may need to do some hunting on line. With the power off this time, securely tie a few feet of string around the thermostat wiring at the switch. carefully loosen the cooling element to free the thermostat and pull it free. Now tie the string to your new thermostat and pull the string back through so the wiring is pulled into place. Put everything back the way you found it and, after a short while, enjoy a nice cold drink.
