Nikon COOLPIX S5 is not turn ON - Nikon COOLPIX S5 Digital Camera

I have the same problem. My Nikon Coolpix S5 camera was idle for about a month with the battery inside and when I tried to use it, it wouldn't turn on. I checked the battery and found that it wouldn't come out easily after flicking the battery lever. After I managed to get the battery out by tapping the camera on my palm, I discovered that it was flat and bulging in the middle. I put in a new fully charged battery but the camera would not switch on even after repeated tries. Can anybody help me please? Thanks in advance, Hannah

It's Hannah again. I took my Nikon Coolpix S5 camera to Nikon Hong Kong Service centre and after they had a preliminary look at it, they told me that the IC (or whatever) in the camera has probably burnt out and that it would cost about USD120 to repair the camera. USD120!! -----heck, it would be cheaper to buy a brand new one here in Hong Kong since this model is already out of fashion! I really wonder if this quoted repair price is a rip-off or is just another way of saying, "Throw the camera away and don't waste time repairing it!" Advanced technology, dependability, reliability, save the environment, blah, blah, blah,.....my foot! I'll never purchase a Nikon prouct ever again!!

Coolpix 4300 needs driver & update for vista

this solution was originally written by a fellow expert dauphine

You can download PictureProject software from this address: http://chsv-soft.nikon-image.com/jpn/software/win/S-P2____-175WU-JPNJP.exe

That is the only Nikon software that supports Vista since your camera is "outdated".

Here is a quote from Nikon site:

  • We had released a Windows Vista-compatible version of PictureProject, v1.7.5, for use with the models listed below, and all models that followed. PTP (models supporting the PTP protocol) and Mass storage USB transfer options can be used for camera connection. However, the camera's transfer button can not be used to transfer pictures over a PTP connection. Set the USB transfer option to Mass storage to enable the camera's transfer button.
Currently, the new Nikon Transfer and View NX will replace Picture Project as our new Image Transfer and Browser applications. These applications support the same Nikon products as Picture Project.

Nikon CoolPix S5 - Same trouble

I went through the process of sending my camera in to the nikon repair center. it was used very little, in fact it appears brand new. it had never been mistreated, wich is what nikon tried to convince me must have happened because they refuse to believe that they have sold an inferior product. they never told me what is wrong with the camera but wanted $146 to fix it and send it back. the only solution is that everyone send their s5 back to the service ctr and refuse to pay to have them repaired. they e-mail a survey and if we all give them low marks maybe they will decide that they should take care of their customers a little better, especially with todays economy. the survey asks if you would purchase or recommend NIKON again. I told them that I WOULD AVOID NIKON LIKE A SICK CHINESE CHICKEN.

  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Nikon Coolpix S5 lens cover won't open

Hi Debscan, My 1.4 year old S5 developed the same problem and after checking out various websites I get the impression that it is a common one to these cameras. I found that if I put the camera on a level table and then turn it on (and off) 3 times the lens cover would open further with each try. On the third turn-on the lens cover would drop fully with a definite "Click" and the camera would work. The next time I shut it off, the lens would not close properly, but the same "Third times the charm" routine would always work. This may only delay the inevidable final crash of the camera, but it might get you a few more pictures out of it.
