OK, Canon will hate me for this.
1. Remove ink cartridges
2. Remove print head
3. go to sink or tub (stainless steel, not plastic type), pick up a roll of paper towel on the way.
4. Fold several layers of paper towel and place on flat surface.
5. Run hot water until HOT!
6. Turn hot water back to a dribble.
7. Run the dribbling hot water through print head, be careful not to wet the gold contacts.
8.When water running through print head is clear, place print head on paper towel.
9. Repeat number 7 and 8 until no colour shows on paper towel.
10. Gently DAB print head (DO NOT WIPE) inside and out with dry paper towel until dry.
11. I normally replace print head after drying, but you may wish to let it air dry overnight.
12. Replace print head in printer and install cartridges
13. Start printing.
I do this to all 4 of my Canon printers every 6 months or so.
If any colour fails to print after this process it means your print head probably needs replacing.

Yes. I have had my Dell 1700 printer since early 1997 or 1998 and have replaced the toner cartridge 3 times, self cleaned about once a year or two and it has survived 7 moves with the US Coast Guard overseas and in country. I can't really say it stands out since this was the 1st and only laser printer I have ever owned, but, I think it's longevity muct speak for itself. I can say that as far as my printing applications hve gone over the past decade, I hve owned 6 inkjet printers and spent thousands of dollars on ink for my many digital photos from around the world, yet, my Dell 1700 is the old reliable with only 3 toner refills, (the good one's, not remanufactered, about $59- 80 dollars depending on area of country), so, I must say I am very pleased with th product and it's durability.

i have had the mp480 for a few months and absolutely love it! The problem is that all of a sudden it shut itself down!!!! this never happened before, i had printed out a few things prior to this happening, nothing unusual happened, but when I tried to print a few more pages, i got the error saying printer is offline... it had powered down!!! i tried to turn it on again but it would only stay on for about 3 seconds before powering down again! We checked all the cables to be sure nothing got disconnected. Still having trouble. Help!!!
