Iomega (33090) 250 GB Hard Drive Logo
Anonymous Posted on Dec 22, 2010

If I format the drive/erase, will I loose all the files I was able to save there? I can't copy my iPhoto onto my Iomega because it says "cannot be modified." If I format, will I lose all the photos already on there?? Other photos came from a flash drive or PC that are currently on there. But I want to move photos now from my MacBook.

I agree with cyberfast & Daynab. Formatting your drive will delete everything on the drive. You will have to find a Windows machine to store your data. It sounds like you are wanting to use your HDD for both Windows and Mac. To do this you will need to format your HDD as FAT32 or exFAT (see first bullet point). Otherwise you can only use the HDD with Windows or Mac.

  • If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can format your drive as exFAT (aka FAT64). You have to at leave be running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (which added exFAT support in version 10.6.5 on November 10, 2010. OS X 10.6.5 can read, write, and create exFAT partitions.).
  • To format your drive as FAT32 using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you will need to download a FAT32 format tool.Download and put in your root folder (C:\), open the command prompt (From the Start menu search box type command and at the top of the list is Command Prompt. Click it.) Type cd\ and hit enter, then type fat32format X: (the X represents the partition or drive letter. Make sure you are using the drive letter (of your device) before hitting enter.)

    5. Click on the Options button.

    6. Select Master Boot Record as the partition type.

Yes, formatting means it removes everything, even windows if your windows is installed on it. You'll want to move your files or make backups elsewhere. For your iPhoto problem I'm not familiar with it but right click the files and go to properties. If read-only is checked, uncheck it. That would explain it.

I have a mac and a new iogmega external drive, 500g. I cannot move any files onto the iomega or save them. I get messages such as "that file does not exist" to iomega can't be modified,...

Hello,
With the drive plugged in, going into your Applications ' Utilities ' Disk Utility Select the drive and press Verify Disk, Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. If you don't have anything on the drive right now, try formatting it with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system from the Disk Utility.
If that doesn't work the drive may be damaged. If you have another PC / Mac, trying plugging it in and see if it works there. If the drive is under 1 year old it should still be under warrantee, in which you could return it / RMA and get a new one sent back from the manufacture.

Complete user manual as said to be available in document with product SPHDU2 I need more detail than "drad and drop copies of your critical files onto the drive" I am computer iliterate

Open "My Documents".
Hold the CTRL key down, and click the mouse on the first file/folder that you want to copy.
While holding the CTRL key down, click the mouse on the next file/folder that you want to copy.
While holding the CTRL key down, keep clicking to "add" more files/folders to your "selected" objects.

Release the CTRL key.
Click with the SECOND (usually the RIGHT) mouse-button on one of the selected files/folders.
Point at "Send To".
Click on the icon for your your IOMEGA device.
The selected files/folders will be copied.

When the 'copy' completes, do _NOT_ delete your original files.
Instead, keep those original files in your 'My Documents' folder,
and keep the copy on the IOMEGA. That way, if your C: disk-drive fails,
or if the IOMEGA fails, then you still have _ONE_ copy of your files.

I am trying to trasfer a large amount of files from my macbook to a dell laptop. The mac will recognize the drive and i am able to backup and save files onto it, however when i plug the drive into the...

The problem most likely is the Dell does not recognize the MAC file format (HPFS), but the MAC will recognize the PC's FAT 32 file system.
First format the USB mass storage device using the Dell, format this device in FAT 32 not in NTFS because the MAC can read and write/copy PC format files but the Dell/PC cannot read MAC format files.
Then Safely remove this device, connect it to the MAC and copy the files onto this drive. When you connect this device to the Dell, you will be able to see the files.
Have fun.

Cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

Can not add pictures to Kodak

To get a good start, you reformat the frame's internal memory by following the steps below: 1. Click on the "Macintosh HD" icon. 2. Click on "Applications". 3. Click on "Utilities". 4. Click on "Disk Utility". 5. "Kodak" drive should be in the list showing a white drive icon 6. Click that icon and select “Erase”. 7. Select the “MS-DOS file system (FAT16)” option and give it a volume name e.g. "Kodak". The format will begin when you click the “Erase” button below. 8. Try to copy the files to the re-formatted internal memory of the frame. 1. Forget about using any software. Once you connected your frame onto your Macintosh, it will appear as a white drive icon on the desktop. You can copy pictures “drag and drop” from iPhoto to the frame. Just make sure that the pictures you will be copying are in JPEG or EXIF format.
