I have tried many games and several tvs and the result is the same. The audio is perfect but the video sometimes flickers on for a few seconds and then goes to kind of a red and grey grid or just a black screen. Is there anything besides a dirty machine and games that would cause this?

Try the system on another TV. If this doesn't yield any results, then you may need to get the console replaced.
If you can see video on the other TV set, try to connect the console to the TV directly, rather than through the A/V ports on your DVD player or HD converter box, as this can sometimes cause more harm than good.
try a different av cord.yellow, red, white cord or what ever cord that goes to your tv.sometimes the cord gets broke where the audio is at and sometimes the system has a setting where it won't project sound
I see this in my store all the time. The Red Ring of Death fix will fix your problem temporarily (meaning anywhere from 1 hour to a couple months), but temporary is the only thing you will get. The best thing to do is save up for a new one.
