Question about PC Laptops

Boot problem toshiba portege344oct...its an old model & i acquired it 2nd hand.... originally, its os was win98 but its already winxp when i got it....hd drive is already bigger than what was its original and with additional RAM already...from 64mb to 128mb.... many upgrades have already been done to it i think.... now, it won't boot....i think its b-coz the cd rom drive is external via USB port.....i already tried CMOS & changed the boot sequence to cd rom but the same happens...it stops.... a friend suggested to have the HD removed and repair it thru another notebook....problem is i'm afraid taking it out coz it might just get worse considering the tiny parts inside....what do you think sir? thank you in advance & god bless...

Did it boot at any time you had it?
How far does it boot from the hard drive now?
Are there any messages?
Are you trying to boot from the usb cd rom with an xp disk?
If you can do that, personally I would just reinstall windows.
Hard Disk removal is not a difficult process on a laptop. You can connect it to a pc with one of those external boxes for 2.5"drives, cheaply available. XP will not boot if you put an installed copy on another computer (unless it is exactly the same).
Worst case (a process I once had to do with a tablet pc) is to make a small bootable partition on that hard drive, put the xp install files on that partition, then put it back in the laptop and install windows from the small partition onto the rest. There are more detailed instructions how to do this, if you go that route.
If you take parts out of your laptop, make sure you don't give it a static shock by touching something grounded.

I have an old laptop that partition and hd have been reformatted. I've tried using boot disk but keep getting the message that says, ''save to disk partition not found. So, can't get win98se to load as...

Haven't used win98 for a while so bear with me and this uses DOS COMMANDS too.
If useing restore cd/floppy you have to use a utility from compaq that creates two partitions on hard-drive.
They may have a restore floppy if you need it too.
One for "recovery files" and one for "OS Boot"
AHH, the memories, I still have my 95/98/ME Laptops up and running for older stuff. HP n CQ too.
Restore CD should do it all though.
If no restore CD - have Win98 CD?
if Harddrive partitioned and formated - Just do 1
1. boot from Win98 CD.
Partition n Format
2. Choose boot to DOS (puts u in virtual drive A)
AT PROMPT
3. Type drive letter of CD ( C: D: or E: )
4. Type CD Win98
5. Type Fdisk ( to partion drive)
reboot n do 1 + 2
6. Type format C: ( I do this to ckeck drive for errors)
OR
JUST Boot from CD and follow install instructions.
1 to 6 for if you have problem with Win98 CD setting up Harddrive.

I have HP laptop with Windows OS.Can I ADD Windows XP OS?

yes you can install winxp if you have winxp bootable disk.
Boot your computer with winxp disk.
For that insert winxp disk into cd or dvd rom then when you power up press F8 or F5 or F12 to get first boot option then set first boot as your cd or dvd rom then you can boot computer with disk.

Formatting IBM Thinkpad 600E

I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.

Unable to boot, I can't installed WIN98

Hi,

NTLDR is NT Loader which indicates that the hard disk originally contains an NT OS such as Windows XP. The laptop not reading the installer is possibly a CD ROM or CD disc problem. Most (but not all) NT OS would be using an NTFS type of HD format. Windows 98SE would only read and install on a FAT(32).

What perhaps you can do is to remove the HD from the laptop and using an external 2.5 interface to USB connect it to a 2nd PC and re-partition that HD as well as format it to FAT32. You can also make that HD bootable (do a Google) and copy the entire CD installer of Windows 98SE to a folder inside that HD.

Once back to the laptop, it should boot to a C: prompt, go to the folder where the Win98SE installation/setup files are located and run setup.exe.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Toshiba 310cds windows '98

go here >http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp

Put in product type, family, product series, model, Operating system, Choose audio for driver type, choose your country, then download the audio driver for win98 and install it once downloaded that should fix the audio problem
As for the flash drive go to the manufacturers web site and find the win98 driver
Win98 will not auto recognize flash drives like winxp does , they require a driver for windows to find them
Best of luck
Hope this helps you
