Symbol ls1908 USB scanner scan, but no field input to computer
Why can't my Symbol LS1908T scanner transfer data that it reads? For instance I will scan a barcode and the field that the cursor is on remains blank on the computer. This is true for notepad as well as quickbooks.

<p>Bar code symbols are composed of a number of adjacent bars
and spaces of different widths of pre-defined codes. A barcode scanner is used
to read or scan the bar code symbol to represent the information to decode.
Once the symbol is scanned by a handheld reading device or another, can then be
used by computer software to track inventory and perform other functions.
Microsoft Excel is a computer application that use bar code information can
make the business perform. <br />
<p>1. Insert bar code scanner to your computer using the
"interface cable keyboard wedge". The keyboard wedge interface cable
looks like the printer port of your computer, and differs only in that a
connection between the scanner bar code and serial number of your computer or
USB port. The cable is provided as a peripheral pattern with hand-held bar code
scanners. <br />
<p>2. Open Microsoft Excel on your computer after the bar code
scanner connected to your computer. <br />
<p>3. Links on the Excel cell to the bar code to enter and bar
code scanning to load it into Microsoft Excel. <br />
<p>4. View the data in Excel file is translated into a vision
of the bar code information. <br />
If the scanner beeps just once after a scan, than he recognize the barcode and sends the data to the computer. If you dont receive any data, you are waiting for them on wrong interface. Data from USB or KeyboardWedge do come to Notepad/Word etc. The data from Serial RS232 Connection can you see only in Hyperterminal or similar application.
In the barcode is usually no order, which would say to the computer to change to new line or cell.
You would need to add an suffix to the barcode, check the manual for the procedure or use the following tutorial http://support.symbol.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=12295&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=189588227&stateId=1%200%20189576907
Be sure to use a full PS2 to USB adapter not just the plug adapter. The one to use has the cable and a small encoder box in the middle, usually for keyboard and mouse together. We have seen some of the cheaper adapters not pass the proper voltages to the scanner for a good read. The ones we suggest to our customers is made by Belkin part # F5U119VE1SN
I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.
The scanner is sending the data to the serial port. You need an application to pull that data in off of the COM port. You can test using HyperTerminal. The scanner defaults to 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and no hardware or software handshaking. Point HyperTerminal to the correct COM port (most likely COM1) and set it to the settings I just listed. When you scan you should see the data show up in the window.
If you want the data to go into Notepad or any other program expecting keyboard strokes I would recommend the Motorola (formerly Symbol) USB cable CBA-U01-S07ZAR or the CBA-K01-S07PAR keyboard wedge cable.
