Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Shutting down my 5100 tends to want to shut down on its own after approximately 5 minutes of run time. The power supply was tested and it was said to be fine. The heat sink was re pasted, with the same result. The hard drive was wiped out and the os was reinstalled, that did'nt work. The cooling fan runs fine. everything is clean and free of dust. The problem was only on occasion, then it became more frequent over time, now its after five minutes being on.

Inspiron 530 desktop--- computer boots up, runs just fine for a while, then monitor displays gabled multi-colored patterns, then evetually shuts down.

What is shutting down, the monitor or the computer. Check the power light on each for proper diagnosis. You either have a bad monitor, a bad video display card or a bad PC, specifically a power supply or motherboard. This is a classic symptom of something getting too hot and shutting down. One way to test the monitor is to plug it into something else for an a period of time and test. If you're PC is shutting off, try unplugging unnecessary peripherals, i.e. CD/DVD drives, floppy drives, external USB peripherals, etc. Start with just the video adapter, keyboard, mouse and monitor. Let us know what is shutting off, for further diagnosis.

After a while running it shuts off. fans seem to be working but, not sure if 100%. Does "the professor" work for this type of problem?

I had the same issue with my desktop HP Pavilion. It turned out to be a faulty power connection in the actual power cable right where it connected to the powersupply in the back of the computer. I had the power supply go out on the same computer - new one is about $30 for a replacement - installation is extra. To determine if it's the power cable you can power up and wiggle the cable right at the back where it plugs in. If it drops off immediately then you'll need a new cable. To determine if the power supply is faulty unplug the unit, take the cover off and measure a spare white connector coming off the power supply. You should have +- 5 volts and +-12. If you don't have within 10% of these voltages then replace the power supply

Come on, boots up, then shuts down 5 - 10 minutes later.

check your power options make sure you don't have hibernation enabled, its in the system control panel. try booting from a linux live cd like Ubuntu which you can download for free. If it runs fine under linux, its a windows problem, if it keeps shutting down its a hardware problem. Could be bad ram, or CPU overheating.

It was a faulty or worn out power supply fan. I just replaced it and the computer has been running for about an hour and a half and still no shut down. The system temperature is stable. It runs quieter now. New fan cost 13.88CAD.

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!
