I purchased an acer aspire 5920 notebook a few months back my wife said that the sound just stopped working a few days ago. Can you hear sound through the headphone port? If so then it's possible the speaker wire came loose on the inside. If not, then it's most likely a motherboard problem and you should contact ACER for warranty service.

The alt f10 key combination they were referring to is a system restore and must be pressed during the boot process.  This will erase the hard drive and install everything as it came from the factory.

No sound. I did trouble shoot the problem. Probably the sound card needs to be replaced. I have a new notebook- Acer Aspire 5920

Are you sure? The sound card in a laptop is part of the motherboard.
If you have to replace the sound card, you will have to replace the entire motherboard.

Have you tried reloading the drivers for the existing sound card?
