Well, I think you have got the price for the whole sensor unit.
It is possible to use the much cheaper sensors from a Fujitsu M3093. If only one or two sensor arms are broken a technician can exchange this arms very easy.
Normally you need a sensor unit Part No. PA03951-0154 for round about $ 630.
But you can also insert the sensor arm from these part: PA98201-0179 Sensor M3093DE/DG (EX/GX) or cost about $ 25 per sensor !
Please check if all paper sensor arms are present and not blocked. Sometimes on of then will be missing or broken. The center sensor just below the separation pad is the paper end sensor. If this sensor don't work, the scanner do not stop feeding. It means you scan on sheet, the scanner eject it and then the feed motor do not stop because the paper end sensor don't record a paper end. Another case may be a driver error. In case you are using XP and installed a new service pack please check your SCSI driver versions (ASPI32 and so on) and TWAIN resp. ISIS driver and update them.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

Does the message shows after few pages scanning or is there any
panel error message like J-1 on scanner start up?
If the issue
occurs during scanner start up, then there are staple pins or dirt might
be stuck inside the US Sensor panel inside the scanner. Cleaning and
removing the objects will resolve the issue.
If the error occurs
after few pages scanning, then you may have to check the Pick Roller,
Brake Roller, Pinch Roller and US Sensor FX status. you may have to
replace any of the above, if damaged or worn off.
Hope the above
information is helpful.

I received this message when I was trying to print a pdf file. I attempted messing with the positioning of green paper guide to no avail. My co-worker suggested I uncheck the Choose paper source by PDF page size box on the Print pop-up box. This did the trick.
Does the scanner displays any error message on the scanner panel? Is there any TWAIN error message?
If paper jam occurs, U1 error will be displayed on the scanner panel and TWAIN driver will display " Paper jam the ADF (Code DS32002)" error message.
This error is detected when one of the followings occurs:
1) A document does not reach the TOP sensor while the scanner has transported the document about 250 mm to pick. (The scanner performs retry operation.)
2) The trailing edge of a document does not reach the TOP sensor after the scanner transports the document by the length (L) below. (The document may have slipped on the rollers) Scan condition Transported length.
In order to assist you with your scanner issue, Please provide the issue details with error message.
If nothing is being displayed, then the issue could be due to failure in Pick Motor function or Pick Sensor malfunction.
