I have a canon xsi that I have been using successfully for a year and a half. All of a sudden the focus preview is not working. It doesn't matter what lens I am using. I shoot in manual mode. What I...

When you depress the shutter button halfway, you are (in fact) activating the focus mechanism.
If in AF mode, you should hear the 'beep' when focus is achieved.
However, bear in mind that the XSi has three focussing modes: Quick mode, Live View, and Manual. There is a difference in how focussing is achieved between the Quick and Live View modes. (see page 102 onwards of the user manual "using AF to focus").
Also, the barrel of the lens will move during the focus operation.
If this does not happen, then there is a definate problem.
Having images in focus despite having no movement on the lens, simply means that the aperture settings are probably small enough to give sufficient depth of field to include your subject.

The focus is very poor. Repeated pushing shutter

I believe you must had experienced this in Auto mode. This can happen when camera is too close to the object or coz of other problems. Didn't you try manual modes like AV or TV modes ?

Will not take pictures

Does your lens try to focus or it doesn't try at all? You will have to understand that for the camera to autofocus successfully, theere should be adequate light and contrast. That means, autofocus often fail to focus even colored walls or objects under dim light. If you tried all this in daylight, outdoors, then the autofocus sensor is faulty. Please reply with details of how you tried the af.

The focus on my cannon powershot A540

Do you focus and then push the shutter button half way down to lock in that focus? Then all the way to take the picture?

Do you support the camera on a tripod or kneel down and support your arms on one knee or lean against some object to keep the camera steady> You can even press your arms tightly against your body before you focus and shoot. And be sure to press the shutter button very gently when you shoot so the camera will not shake or move.

Do you have the camera on the right mode for the photo you are attempting to take? Such as night/macro/action/ etc. Try taking photos on just the automatic mode to see if you can get focused shots. Make absolutely sure your camera is not in Macro mode ( a picture of a little flower on the screen) unless you are doing extreme closeup shooting.

Go to your menu>then setting> then set your camera back to default settings if you can. Or if you are unsure how the camera is set. If you do not have your manual you can go to the Canon website at www.canon.com and click on support or downloads and find the manual for your camera and download it. That may give you the answer you need as well.

Please get back to me if you do not have any luck and send along more info such as camera age.

Problem in Manual Focus of Canon Powershot A510

Some how it seems the auto focus- which in macro mode is looking at something else[because of parallax]is over riding your manual focus attempts. Check the manual carefully to see if there is a mention here for special things to do for close work or contact the Canon Technical Support

Canon Powershot A75 blurred LCD display

It sounds like the focus element in your lens is not functioning properly. Does the lens retract completely when you turn off the camera? When you push the button does the camera attempt to focus the image? If you do not see any change in the image when you push the button, and do not hear any sound - then your focus motor is either jammed or malfunctioning. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

Focus in Macro mode

1. Do not use the zoom while using macro. 2. When clicking the Macro button, click it again, only for 2 more seconds at the second click, it goes to 'Super macro' mode for zero distance. This works in the Canon S3 IS, I hope it will help you in the older S2 IS. 3. Use a tripod. 4. Use the timer for no movement when using a tripod. 5. Try using the manual focus, it does the trick when the camera doesn't focus automatically. Good Luck!
