You can find the hard drive size by opening my computer and highlighting the C drive (this is basically the hard drive), towards the lower left of the screen it will tell you the initial size and how many gigs you have left. If it says something like 38.6 g, then it's a 40g hard drive (hard drives are in even sizes, so, round up), the missing 1.4g is used for drivers and utilities. This is just an example, I don't know exactly what size yours is, they come from the factory with various sizes. The optical drive is the CD drive. So, is it a CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+RW. It will say on the front of the drive what it is exactly.

I lost my installation cd please help what can i do to get my external drive to work

A bit more info would be helpful. Tell us, please, exactly what laptop you have (make and model) and what operating system (Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, etc. Exactly what external hard drive do you have? How does the external hard drive connect to the laptop (USB? Firewire? UTP (RJ-41)? eSATA?)

There are just not any a, b, c answers to questions as general as "how do I install my external hard drive to my laptop?) It is very likely you will NOT have to have an installation CD. The purpose of the installation CD is to keep you from having to answer all the questions I just asked. So, tell me in considerable detail what you have and I'll do my best to help. (I'm sure others will offer help also.)

My laptop won't let me access it, and the diagnostics says it has something to do with the hard drive in it. I was just wondering if there was any way to remedy this without buying a whole new drive.

I would assume that your diagnostics tell you the answer already, anyway a new hard drive is pretty cheap today, prices are falling rapidly due to the cheaper cost of Solid State Drives.
SOrry for such an obvious answer but personally I would attempt to back up whatever you need from it (either using a caddy and removing the drive from the laptop) and replace that drive. You can still use your Windows product key after doing a fresh install of Windows.

Whenever back up or defrag laptop goes off

Three things you can try:
1. Disable automatic restart on System failure.2. Boot your laptop to safe mode and run a hard drive diagnostic program3. If the test fails, the replace your hard drive:a) Order the recovery disks for your laptop from the manufacturer of your laptop. Call them to order it.
b) Take your old hard drive to a big name electronics store such as best buy, and ask them to sell you a similar hard drive.
c) purchase a USB to SATA cable (sold in most electronic stores) to turn your old hard drive into an external drive that plugs into your laptop's USB so you can transfer your data.
d) Reinstall Windows using the recovery disks and after your done, plug in your old hard drive and transfer all your data.
Let me know if this helps.

I have a Acer laptop 5000 series, Model.ZL5. It has a 80GB hard drive fitted. Is there a limit to how big a hard drive i can upgrade to?

This laptop supports Parallel connection for hard drive. Most PATA or Parallel ATA hard drives can only support up to 320Gb. There are some PATA hard drives up to 500gb. To answer your question, there is no problem on how huge the size of the hard drive. Just make sure you get a PATA hard drive. :)

I can not play original xbox games now it said the hard drive must be attached and it is what is the problem?

Just assuming that your hard drive did not come with your Xbox 360? Or if it did then you bought your Xbox 360 used maybe? Below is the reason why some hard drives won't work with BC games. But before you go out and buy a new HDD then go ahead and remove your hard drive from the Xbox 360 and reinsert it to see if that helps. Note: it has to be a HDD not a USB memory for BC gaming.

"Simple. Certain eBay sellers try to make more money by buying 20GB official Microsoft Xbox 360 hard drives for cheap, and then putting larger laptop hard drives into the official 360 hard drive case and then selling them for less than an official drive of the same size would be. Now, technically, these hacked hard drives are the exact same thing as an official one, at least as far as parts go. They will function exactly the same as an official drive. But many of the sellers that sell these drives forget (or might be just plain ignorant about) one important thing - to play backward compatible Xbox games, the hard drives need a special partition for the Xbox 360 to store BC-related data in. If the hard drive doesn't have that partition, you can't play backward compatible games with it."

"So, to answer the question "Why won't original Xbox games work on my Xbox 360" there really is only one answer - Your cheap eBay hard drive might not be as official as you thought and is missing key files that allow for backward compatibility. The solution - Buy official Xbox 360 accessories from established retailers, or if you want to save a few bucks on eBay, make sure you ask the right questions so you know what you're getting."

I can't figure out how to set my hard drive as "Master", I don't see anything like that in the bios menu. Where do I find it?

Hi Donovan,

In order to save you a lot of time and trouble, I wonder if you might comment me back as to what you are trying to accomplish. Answering a these questions will help too.

  • Please confirm we are talking about a thinkpad.
  • How many hard drives do you have
  • Does the machine boot
  • Does your CD work
If you have one drive and it boots, its master

Unless you have two Hard drives, the master / slave is sort of moot. There is also the CS option. This is why I need additional info.

Best regards,
Mike
