Hobart A-200 mixer gets hot and weak. Motor housing gets too hot to keep your hand on it. Service tech told me the motors usually don't go out. What other problem could it be?

Motor or brushes to motor are weak and not making a good connection inside motor or motor armeture failure.

Could be a bunch of different things. Depending on how old the mixer is, brushes at the back of the motor. If the brass armature is worn down I have been told its too expensive to replace. They haven't used brushes in 25 years. There are a number of bearings that could be going bad. If the main bearings at the back housing or at the gearbox are badly worn, they may be letting the armature come in contact with the windings. If that is the case the motor will be really hot when running. One obvious question is do you have the proper lubricant and have enough of it? Remove the top cover then pop the inspection hole cover off with a screwdriver. The grease inside should be the consistency of heavy wheel bearing grease. If you had a slug of it on a tablespoon it would stay on it if you turned it upside down. It is a food safe grease available at Hobart parts stores. If the lubricant is thin like motor oil, it is totally worn out and is probably not lubing your bearings at all. One other thing to look at is capacitors. A capacitor looks like a large flashlight battery shaped black object with two wires running from one end of it. It is usually located behind the mixer bowl behind a plate held on by two screws. If your mixer has a "run" capacitor, it may be bad. Remove it and head for WW Graingers or such supply house. Get a capacitor of exactly the same voltage and microfarads. Hook it back up and give it a shot.
Back to the bearings. The main motor shaft should have no play at all if you try to wiggle the shaft up, down or sideways. If it does, the bearings are available at industrial supply houses and are not realy hard to replace if you go slow and have a lot of patience in taking things apart and keeping them in the proper order to reassemble.

You have killed it by overloading the bowl. Hobart recomends no more than 65% bowl capacity on doughs & 75% on batters or icings. Replace the motor or the whole unit

Harry, if you're confident that you can take it apart and repair it yourself, then do the following. Go to www.hobartservice.com website. Register, and when you've been admitted to the site find the discontinued products section on the left hand side of the page, click on it, then select the Food Machines Group, then select Mixers. Make sure that your ML# is covered by the document.Select the file numbered A-200 Parts List F-6728. pdf. Look for the ML#. Once you've selected the document, go to page #9, there you'll find the exploded drawings for the A 200 transmission parts. If you look at the whole document (15 pages), you should be able to see what needs to be taken apart to get at the worm gear.

If you're not sure you can do this...Then don't do it. But if you do, check all bearings, springs and gears for excessive wear and replace as necessary. Hobart techs do this stuff every day. For someone who has not done this kind of rebuilding before, it can be a long and expensive learning curve. Good luck. No, do not swap hot and N.

First, verify rotation. As the attachment shaft rotates, it should push the engagement pin into the keeper slot. Looking down on top of the mixer, the planetary should rotate clockwise.

If the unit runs backwards, does it start slow? Can you get it to run either way by giving it a push start before turning on the power? If so, your start switch is not working properly. (Which is my guess) Check your capacitor.

There is mechanical and electronic start switches. (Metal arms and a contact or a little gold rectangular metal can.)

Im a service tech for hobart and repair these mixers often-is it worth repairing the unit?YES it is.I have never seen a motor burn up on these units,i have seen keys sheared and gears broken but thats the extent.There is a overload/reset button that sits on the back of the mixers pedistal,if its tripped when you push it in it will click.when these units need service it is usually from overloading the unit with too much product.Any other questions let me know.

I know what these codes are: code 19 is that phase c is over current fault and code 23 is a motor stall fault.I would start by making sure you 3 phase wiring going into the mixer is there.I service these mixers as im a service tech for hobart.these units are very detailed and i can walk you thru some things to check but if you have an electrical problem you most likley will have to call a hobart service tech because we have special equipment to diagnose the fault.let me know it may be something simple as these mixers are usally maintenance free.
