The DXI4286-2 is an Analog phone, it does not allow for both handset to be used at the same time. You can transfer a call from one handset to another, but cannot talk on both at the same time.
The following is from the user's manual for your phone:
Unavailable message is displayed on the LCD screen of the handset. • Make sure the other handset is not already in use. Both handsets cannot be in talk mode at the same time. • Place the handset in the main base for at least 5 seconds to re-register to the main base. • Make sure the handset is not too far from the main base when trying to use.
You might want to try one of the DECT or a Digital 2.4 or 5.8 GHz phones, they allow you to use multiple handsets at the same time.
On the handset that is on the base is the one you need to use to set the time and date. It will also clear out the CL on answering machine.
On the handset without pushing talk hit the flash key. A message will appear on your phone and it says Answering machine. You can listen to all the options but to set time and date ---push the 8 button. Set your time by using the phone keys such as it's 09:53 then look up in the right corner and use the + arrow key to set AM or PM. Then hit the # key. Then in the upper right corner it will say Mon---use the + arrow key to set the day. Then hit the # key. The message on your phone will say the day is and then the time is. Then hit flash. Then you can check your answering machine and see if that worked. This took me some time. I would not buy another phone like this again.
1. Disconnect Battery from handset(s)
2. Disconnect Phone Cord from wall jack
3. Disconnect Phone cord from base unit
4. Disconnect AC adapter from wall outlet
5. Allow to sit for 30 min
6. Reconnect Phone Cord to base
7. Reconnect Phone cord to wall jack
8. Reconnect AC Adapter to wall outlet
9. Reconnect Battery to hanset until you click or feel the plug snap into place
10. Re-Register Handset by placing on main base in most instances.
It is quite possible that you'll need to go into the menu settings on your base-unit and reset the unit or restore factory default, whichever option it gives you. Also, look in the menu on the phone to see if there is an option to reset the handset also. After resetting the unit and/or handsets, try to register the handsets again, one at a time. If that still does not fix the problem, you may have handsets that are not compatible with your system, or your system may not be able to support that many phones. However, if you have the right handsets, and your system can host that many handsets, then I'm confident that resetting the unit and re-registering your handsets should fix your problem. Step 1: Press and hold FIND HANDSET on the main telephone base for 10 seconds.
Step 2: When the IN USE light starts to flash, release the FIND HANDSET button.
Step 3: Press and release FIND HANDSET again. The IN USE light will turn off and in a few seconds, all handsets will be de-registered.
Step 4: All handsets will show NOT REGISTERED.
To register a handset (register 1 handset at a time): Step 1: Place the handset in the base unit or a charger that is connected to a power outlet. If PRESS FIND HNDST 4 SEC ON BASE does not appear on the screen after a few seconds, lift up handset and place in base or charger again.
Step 2: On the telephone base, press and hold FIND HANDSET for four seconds. Release FIND HANDSET once the IN USE light comes on.
a while the handset will emit a series of tones, the newly registered
handset will be assigned the lowest extension number not previously
assigned to another system handset (1-4) when successfully registered.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if the handset does not successfully register to
the telephone base within two minutes.
Unplug the battery. Hold down The * (star) and the #(hash) keys simultaneously. Re-connect the battery, phone will beep and screen will be blank. Press the voicemail (righthand silver key under the lcd screen). As above EEPROM/RAM message will appear. Place handset on base and your problem is solved.
You may need to "reset" the whole system. Do this by : 1 Unplug phone line, power to charger base, and remove the batteries. 2 Wait a couple of minutes. 3 Plug in batteries first, then phone line, and finally the power cord.
Then try to set the phones in the basecharger to register.

Only one handset can be registered at a time. The handset ID for the supplied handset(s) was assigned at the factory, which has #1 or #2 in the display (#2 for models that have two handsets in packaging).
