Question about Acer Aspire 5100-5033 Notebook

Acer Aspire 5100 - what do I need to adapt hard disk to fit this laptop?

Hi and thanks for any help. I have a Travelstar 80 GB ATA drive that needs some type of adapter for the pins to fit into the hard drive port in the laptop drive bay. The port in the computer is smaller and centered, whereas the hard drive connection pins are wider spaced. I can't find a specific part to adapt one to the other. I can buy a 'drive caddy', but that is just the metal housing for the drive itself. I appreciate your time on this.

That is a very interesting problem. I couldn't find anything on a hard drive connector. The only thing I found is on Ebay and they call it a hard drive cage. They are very specific as to it not being the caddy. There's no pic, but here's the link, maybe you can contact him to send a pic. It could be what you need???

I have a Acer laptop 5000 series, Model.ZL5. It has a 80GB hard drive fitted. Is there a limit to how big a hard drive i can upgrade to?

This laptop supports Parallel connection for hard drive. Most PATA or Parallel ATA hard drives can only support up to 320Gb. There are some PATA hard drives up to 500gb. To answer your question, there is no problem on how huge the size of the hard drive. Just make sure you get a PATA hard drive. :)

Hi i m hems i m upgrading hard disk on my ( acer aspire 1641nwlmi ) laptop hard disk is 160 gb but it's not detecting my new hard disk , my new hard is ok but i have quistion 160 gb is supporting my laptop...

The Aspire 1641 is supplied with a 80Gb hard drive. If the new 160Gb hard drive is not detected in the BIOS then the BIOS cannot support this size hard drive.
Check your manual/specification to see the maximum size hard drive it can support.
You can install the 160Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

I want to know what type of hard drive I can use in an Aspire 3680.

The specs show an 80 GB hard drive. Probably ATA (you can tell by looking at the end of the drive--if it has a bunch of pins on it, it's ATA. If there are only two connectors, it's a SATA.
You can probably go to 150 GB or so. Don't go too large or you'll be bound to have problems. Mostly there are 120 GB and larger drives out there now. They don't make 80 GB any more.

If your looking for a tool to diagnose the hard drive you need to go to the hard drive manufacturers website
Eg for a hitachi/travelstar drive you can get a copy of DFT (drive fitness test) from hitachi site

You can create the install disks from acers in built recovery console.....typically takes about 2 dvds

Acer 5100 PC

Pretty simple. You'll just need to determine whether the system uses SATA or IDE for the hard drive interface. Many machines manufactured in the past couple of years use SATA, but any 2.5" drive will be compatible providing you have the correct interface. ATA drives for laptops are generally called PATA and if it's such an interface any ATA-6 drive will be compatible.

You might need a SATA driver for the Vista installation, so bear that in mind. You'd specify additional drivers during the setup process.

Good luck.

What size drive is in it now? The user manual should tell you what size drive it can use. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is to go back with the same size. The brand does not matter. Is your hard drive IDE or SATA? What is the model of your laptop?
