I would use a "secure wipe" - there are free downloads for ths on the internet - not comfortable recommending one over the other as I am just a nutral tech.

Using a secure wipe will also delete any and all partitions on the drive, then when you are ready, format the whole drive in NTFS format. Then it will be ready to use in its full gigabits.

Hard disk sector problems

Yes, and maybe.

How's that for a clear, concise answer?

When using the Restoration Disk, or a fresh new Installation Disk; if there are bad sectors you will be advised that CHKDSK, is about to run. (Or instructed to use CHecKDiSK, and how)

CHKDSK will then see if there are good sectors that it can move info over to, OR; you will be advised that you have an irreparable hard disk. (Harddrive)

Reformatting is using the Restoration Disk, or Full Installation disk; and when asked choose Full Install.
(Destructive Installation)

Do NOT click on Format in ANY other way.

USE the Restoration Disk, or Full Installation disk.

(Otherwise you will wipe the harddrive clean, and you do NOT want to do this)

Drivers

It sounds as if the OS was not installed. Once PC is formated it wipes out the OS. Try running you OS disk (XP,Vista,Win7).
If after the second install you are getting the same Message OS not found now you want to check the harddrive.
F8 on boot Safe mode with command Prompts. and run "chkdsk /r" with out the quotes. This will check your harddrive and repair any bad sectors.

Good luck!

Howto replace a 160 gig harddrive with a 320gig in a desktop,with a windows vists operating sys.was up graded from a windows xp,BIG MASTAKE.

Use disk imaging software to copy your drive over. I like "Acronis true image home" but there are many you can use. Also if you buy a new hard-drive a lot of time it will include instructions and software to get this done. Here are the basics on what you will need to do: - install the new hard-drive as a slave drive - clone old drive to new drive - remove both drives - reinstall new drive as a master drive and you done. It's not hard once you've done it once.

How to make Vista to recognize my old Hard drive

There are normally only two ways to get vista to recognise large drives and that is to format it within windows by way of right click my computer then click manage and then highlight your harddrive right click and select format. The other way is if your drive isnt being recognised because of the bios and needs updating, as most bios chips did when upgrading to vista.
