Install the audio drivers on your computer and your computer audio will be back.

U can go to device manager and then right click on audio driver and update.
Steps to go to device manager are as below
1. You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardwaretab, and clicking Device Manager.
2. Fortunately, Device Manager can be more easily run by launching devmgmt.msc

2.1 SPEAKERS NO SOUND. CONTROL PANEL DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ANY AUDIO DEVICE & CANNOT ADJUST SPEAKER VOLUME.HAVE NEVER HAD SPEAKERS HOOKED UP BEFORE.

> CONTROL PANEL DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ANY AUDIO DEVICE

That's your problem. It could be:

* the audio-device integrated on your computer's motherboard is "disabled" -- Windows cannot use it

* there is *NO* audio-device integrated on your computer's motherboard -- Windows cannot use non-existent hardware.

* Windows has not installed the correct device-drivers for the integrated audio-device.

* you have an add-in PCI audio-device, and Windows has not installed the correct device-drivers for this hardware.

I did something on the internet and now my speakers don't work anymore. The icon at the bottom right hand corner is gone. What can I do to hear again? I don't have the manual for the speakers to refer back...

Looks like your audio drivers have gone. have you tried system restore? Go to start, all programs, system tools system restore, then choose a previous date when your sound was still ok.
