I am hoping that some of you jeep brainiacs out there can help with a suggestion of the problem with my 1992 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 hi-output. Symptoms: backfire from time to time....cuts off when driving, cuts off when idling low (like at stoplights)...however, will start up pretty much immediately after it cuts off. Very slow driving speed seems to avoid the cutoff problem (like 10 to 15 mph). Since this problem starting about 4 weeks ago, we have put new parts in for: distributor, magnetic pick up, crank shaft sensor, and the ignition switch. The ignition switch was replaced yesterday and I had a full day of excellent ++ engine performance, and today, it began the same problem...cutting off when I was driving, and at intersections when engine slows. Just before cutting off, it "burps" like rough engine performance, and then dies.....any help out there...PLEASE!!

i would recommend you connect a fuel pressure gauge to the engine fuel rail port and watch the fuel pressure as you drive it note fuel pressure should be between 31 and 39 psi and stay there while vehicle is being driven. if it drops check the wiring to the pump in many cases the pump connector is burned and losses connnection. also try watching the egr see if its diaphragm keeps surging try disconnecting the vacuum hose to it see it any change is noticed, common problem 4.0 engines of that year EGR's cost about 90 dollars but help stalling and emissions problems greatly.

I remember the "Parts Replace" routine all too well from my truck. It's probably the fuel filter needing to be changed, clogging up and clogging the flow.

I've owned two 1997 Jeep Wranglers and eventually they both shared a common problem of rough idle, low fuel mileage, check engine light and and rough acceleration. Sometimes it would run fine but sometimes...

Hi,
This is a broad spectrum of possibilities. I would first start with a simple approach of insuring good gas.
When these symptoms occur, get a bottle of fuel additive and add to your tank. Possibly you have some condensation issues. This could be just the ticket... I hope so. Good luck.

1992 jeep wrangler with faulty acceleration. It

It is possibly the O2 sensor. I had some issues with early 90's 4.0 liters where the O2 sensor would stick rich under heavy acceleration and would cause it to lean out and bog down. It felt like a rochester four barrel flat spot on an old chevy. I hope this helps.
