I went to make dinner and came back to my Lenovo R61 and it was completely out of battery power. I plugged the cable in and it ran through the start of the Windows XP setup. The hard drive light flashes like it is starting to work and keeps going for several minutes. It then continues to blink but nothing appears on the screen.

I,d suggest To charge the battery Fully.
Then power up the laptop, with A/C Adaptor connected.
Also check your models user manual, regarding the sleep/hibernate mode. the laptop may have gone into one of these modes. Usually a ( zzz ) Icon Key or Similar.
Also when booting press the LCD/VGA Button.
If all else fails, try to see if your laptop, has a hard-reset button or switch. ** Sometimes this can be a small hole ** On the underside of laptop. *** Only use with laptop Powered Off ***

Please follow the steps below to reset the lenovo to factory settings
Note: All your data will be lost. So keep that in mind.
So take the backup of your data first in a separate HDD or flash drive.
1. Switch off the Computer
2. Press the power button and then immediately start tapping f11 key on the top of your keyboard.
3. You will hear a beep sound and then stop pressing it.
4. You will get the screen says windows is loading files. Wait untill it finishes.
5. Select the default language which is US and Click on next .
6. Enter your login credentials (username and password) if you use to login to the windows.
7. Then you will get the system Recovery Options screen where you need to select the last option "Lenovo Product Recovery"
8. Again preferred language will be English US and hit Next.
9. Accept the terms and conditions and hit next and then hit Yes on the warning.
10. Then it will start resetting the Lenovo Think pad to the factory default with no previous data. Same as when you purchased it.

try opening the bottom compartment doors. look for a the cmos battery. If you take the cmos battery out(looks like a watch battery), short out the battery terminals for 60 seconds, this will likely dump any cmos locks/passwords, and default them. Worth a try . Please disconnect all power cords and take the main battery out first.

Depending on your OS check event log /windows error log to find out what is causing the problem. And disable the service or reinstall driver needed.

turn off the pc
remove cables on your laptop
remove the battery
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
reinsert the cables and battery
Turn on the pc
plug the adapter and check if the battery is charging.

The power supply in most computers has a fuse, either internal or external, that can blow without you noticing. Basically, you've been on battery operation this whole time, and the battery's finally gone dead. It will be necessary to open the case and examine the power supply section. It may be possible to replace the fuse yourself, but any operation of this nature that involves opening the case will void any warranty you may have.
When you plug in the adapter into the laptop a LED lights up to indicate that it is connected to the mains supply and is charging. A faulty adapter or the connector is not making proper electrical contact, this causes the LED not to illuminate. Wriggle the connector plug to see if the charge light comes on, if it does then the loose connector needs repairing.
Check the adapter with a multi-meter, the voltage reading should be a slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the adapter. If the voltage is more than 10% below the nominated voltage then replace the adapter it is faulty.
