Shortest Route and Fastest Route Garmin Nuvi 200

I recently took a business trip to Northamton from Hull. From Hull to Northamton I programmed the Nuvi to take the fastest route (was suggested by colleague), as this would take me via the motorway ?? Anyway it started to direct me to the A roads, so I carried on driving (pressed detour) and that seemed to solve the problem. However, on the way back (Northampton-Hull), I had really problems and it took me along all the A roads and every way I tried it just seemed to take me the - SHORTEST ROUTE (the longest route), as I have had the same problem. ?????????

I downloaded 2009 Maps update and since then Nuvi 200 try's to take me from interstate to secondary roads. Move 5 blocks and reroutes to correct roads. Garmin says they never heard of problem and they cannot figure out any fix.

The problem could be in your avoidance settings. I know when I was in Delaware, a 1/2 hour trip turned out to be a 3 hour detour because I had set to avoid highways.

In Garmin, if it's checked, it means AVOID. I know the documentation isn't clear but I've learned from experience (trial & error).

Sometimes it happens. Garmin isn't perfect but it beats looking at a map most of the time.

Why the garmin nuvi 2595 is avoiding freeways

No. it depends on your settings. You can choose fastest route, shortest route or to avoid like toll, U-turn, ferry, or..... check your settings and reset it as suitable for your driving situation.

How do I get me garmin 1350 to take the highways instead of the back roads.

You can tell it to take the shortest route, and this will go on all roads including backroads, or you can tell it to take the fastest route and it will include highways. I would highly suggest you leave it on 'fastest route' setting.

You can simply Google the manuals.

and

A free tip for South Africa (and other countries): Always use the option of finding the fastest route and never the the shortest route. It is not specifically mentioned, but the fastest route is always the safest route as well :)

Set the fastest route. The shortest route will take you off motorways and up narrower roads. Garmin satnavs know the difference between fastest and shortest.

I type in the correct address and it's telling me to take alternate routs, which are way out of the intial way to my destination.Telling me to get off on side streets?

Untick shortest or fastest route

I have had this many times, and you wonder who they paid to make the route? Mr Ying Long a recent migrant?

If i know my way for most of the trip I only engage the GPS at the region I am unfamiliar with that way i only get to go down a one way street the wrong way once in a trip!

You might be choosing Shortest Route and that's exactly what it will do - find the shortest route, no matter what the quality of the roads. You should try choosing Fastest Route.

Wont take a complete address. takes a different route to and fro . how can i set it to take me the same way both ways.how do i plan a trip with stops . do you have a manual. other than the quick start.

I don't know of any Garmin unit that can plan multiple stops. Problem with the Garmin, depending on your current location, it will go either the fastest time route, or the shortest distance. And sometimes, it can take different routes depending on what time of day. Most newer units take traffic into consideration based on time and location. You may want to play with the settings under avoidences.

Return trip

Have you selected how you want to get there, shortest distance, or fastest trip. You can set these under the wrench menu, If you aim for fastest, usually it will select all highway, if you select shortest distance it will calculate a trip that will drag you through every nook and cranny, usually quite entertaing (sightseeing)
