I had the same problem. The back of the freezer had a layer of ice on it and the freezer and fridge wouldn't get cold. An appliance service person from my local area came out and changed the "heater," which I understand was the defrost heater. The heater assembly cost $54 and the labor cost $80 (about an hour). He took the back of the freezer off (from the inside), melted the ice on the coils with a hair dryer and replaced the heater. He told me that the heater wasn't just bad, but that they now use double heaters where mine was only a single. After he removed the old one he showed it to me and it looked like it was burnt out. I usually like to fix things myself, but probably could not have done this on my own. Hope this helps everyone!

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

My GE side-by-side is not cooling.

The electronic control board is probably your culprit. These control boards control the compressor, fans and defrost. Look for any burned spots on the printed circuit bout it could be just bad.

Ge TFX24S refrigerator does not get cold enough

Your Defrost electrical element (heater) is blown, you will need to buy a new defrost heater. Your evaporator coils in your freezer section is froze up (no air flow)...soild ice, thus you're not cooling down properly. You will need to defrost and then underneath the coils you'll find the glass tube with defrost heating element...you will need to replace this part (entire glass heating element)...it's DIY fairly easy to get at.

Ge profile 2004 open door and temp controls off shut door open they come back on light was staying on sometimes to bottom half of coils in freezor froze freezer working but temp in frig 50s on off fri

It is possible the refrigerator is low on Freon. You will need to remove the back panel inside the rear of freezer to examine the evaporator coils. If only a few rows have frost it will be time to replace the refrigerator. If the control panel in the freezer dispenser are coming on and off there may be a bad connection in the plug under the top left door hinge cover. Check that the plug is tight. Let me know what you see first behind the freezer wall, Thanks Sea Breeze

Where is the evaporator coil?

Good day,
The evaporator coil (cooling coil) is located behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment. The panel is held on with screws, but if you have an ice maker, it will have to be removed first.
3 screws (some models use clips) and the wire harness.

I have a GE Refrigerator model # TEX21J1SRRAD 20.6 cubic feet top freezer. a couple of days ago i noticed the refrigerator was getting warm but the freezer was working fine. Could this be a fan problem and...

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of.

Water leaks from left (freezer) side

The drain ends in a pan next to the compressor and should hold about 3 cups of water. The drain begins in the back of freezer behind panel and below the evaporator coils. I have more information if you like, let me know. Sea Breeze

Water leaking out freezer door--unit is still making ice

There is a shroud at the back of the freeezer. (Mine was a GE) but under the shroud is the evaporator coils and also a heating element to defrost the coils during the defrost cycles. Mine had the gutter underneath misaligned and the water went into the freezer and froze instead of going down the drain. I thought it was a ice maker leak until we found that. The weird thing is we had the refrigerator for about 6 years before it started leaking like that.

It has worked fine for about a year since that "fix"
