Hello
You need to do some basic testing for me so we can at least get a preliminary idea of the problem here, open the dryer door and spin the drum, does it spin fairly easily? if it doesn't there is a problem that must be addressed first, then I want you to hold the dryer door switch in and spin the dryer drum while a helper pushes the start switch in, if the dryer drum spins and stays running the motor start capacitor or switch on the motor may be defective, if it doesn't start then the dryer motor may be defective, let me know what you find out asap.
Also please provide the model number of the dryer this is important, further diagnosis is based on the exact model number of the dryer.
The model number is located on a tag on the back of the dryer, if you order any parts you will need it, but from what you said you about the testing I asked you to do you may very likely need a new dryer motor, but before you replace any parts pull the dryer apart and clean all the lint and dirt off everything inside, paying close attention to the electrical parts like the motor. For instructions on how to take a GE dryer apart go to the web site link below and select your style of GE dryer. Remember, any time you work on the dryer it MUST be disconnected from the power outlet.

From one of my favorite web sites on appliance repairs GE style dryer - motor problems: A few common motor problems would be ...I push/turn the start button but he motor only hums or the motor shuts off before the cycle is suppose to be finished or the motor is dead. If you decide to change your own motor remember to write down what color wires go to what # terminals before removing any wires from the motor. This style dryer has a fan blower on one end of the motor, just loosen the 3/8" screw in the middle of the fan blower to remove the motor, don't remove this screw.
I push/turn the start button and the motor just hums: Check for something jammed in the fan blower, worn glides or rear bearing jamming the drum, but unfortunately 9 times out of 10 this is a bad motor and you will need a new one.

If you hear the motor humming and not starting at all it most likely has a severe friction problem with the drum or motor. It could possibly have some type of garment jamming the blower wheel preventing the motor from starting too.
Open the dryer door and manually rotate the dryer drum counter clockwise (CCW). It should take very little effort to rotate the drum. If it's hard to rotate that could explain why the motor hums instead of starting up. If it turns freely, shut the door and see if will start. If it still hums and not start it may have bad motor or a low voltage supply to the motor.

You hit the nail on the head, the drum spun freely, I had my wife hold the start button and I held the door swich and spun the drum and it started. I see no info for the model number on the dryer. Is there some where else I can look to get it?
Very helpful, he got it right the first time.
Thanks
