I have just replaced the two convergence ic's due to the green channel being so out of whack. ( I have done this before 3 years ago) but the green is still out of whack and when viewed as the alignment grid the green is a horizontal hourglass while the other colors are perfect.
I have tried to move the points using the remote and can only drive them left/right not up/down.
There is talk of looking for blown resistors and caps, I see nothing discolored and all solder joints look good.
are there recommendations for diagnosing the warped green grid condition?

Good Day, This is a common problem with this TV, but there is an upgrade to correct the CONVERVGENCE circuit problem. You have a Convergence circuit failure. The Convergence ICs probably need to be replaced. It should be done by a professional due to the adjustments that may need to be done in the factory mode after replacing the ICs.

I dont think you have problem with Red Gun.
One of your Convergence IC is faulty with 2 RK series Resisitor(Low Value) in Convergence
Amp Borad.If you changed IC look for RK series Resistor (may be 3.9ohm/2.7ohm)
The grid (called an overlay) is put in place to fine-tune one of the colors, usually green. Once one color is adjusted perfectly, the other 2 colors are adjusted to match the first color. For example, if the convergence data is completely erased, the tech will set up the overlay and align the green using to the overlay, and then align the red to the green and then the blue to the green. If the alignment is being done after replacing the convergence IC's because one or 2 colors are slightly off in the corners, the green is usually very close to perfect and the use of the overlay is not absolutely necessary. It is pretty easy to align one color using the outer edges of the screen itself. If you do need the overlay it can be purchased from any Hitachi parts distributor such as Herman Panson, Fox or Union Electronics.
Touch-up Convergence adjustments
Enter the Digital Convergence Mode (DCM) by entering 0-6-2-5-9-7-(Status or Index) on the Remote control. The following menu will appear:
Select an active channel or Aux Input. A signal must be applied to the set when performing convergence.
If any Customer Adjustments need to be made, the Menu button can be used to toggle between the Customer Menu and DCM. The MPOSD ADJUST is used to center the Customer Convergence grid. A
highlighted cross will appear along with the Convergence alignment grid. The highlighted cross should be centered onto the center of the Convergence grid.
To perform a Touch Up Convergence, highlight SELECTION and press the right cursor button on the remote. The following menu will appear:
Selections STORE, RESTORE FACTORY, and RESTORE DEFAULT are not shown after selecting
SELECTION. Press the cursor down button on the Remote for these selections to appear. RESTORE
FACTORY loads Convergence defaults from the Factory Loaded section of the Convergence Memory IC.
RESTORE DEFAULT loads Convergence defaults from the sets software.
To perform a Touch-up Convergence:
1. Enter the Convergence Mode and select RED TO GREEN or BLUE TO GREEN. Do not select
GREEN (Green Geometry) without placing a Template over the screen. To perform Green
Geometry, refer to the Complete in-depth Convergence.
2. Use the Cursor buttons on the Remote to Navigate from one adjustment point to another. Press the
Status or Index button on the Remote to select ADJUST. Use the cursor buttons on the Remote to
adjust the Red to Green or Blue to Green. Press the Status or Index button again to navigate to the next adjustment location.
3. After Convergence alignments are complete, press the Menu button on the Remote to return to the SELECTION menu.
4. Highlight the STORE selection and press the right cursor key on the Remote to save changes.
5. Use the GREEN TO RED or GREEN TO BLUE selections to perform convergence when the Green CRT has been replaced.
Yes this is a typical convergence problem, and there are two convergence Amp Ic's that are in need of replacing. If you have any solid state repair experience, you may be able to replace these IC's yourself, but if you do not have any solid state printed circuit board experience, play it safe and call in a tech to assist you in this repair.
Do not try to align the colors with the remote. One of your convergence IC's has gone bad and needs to be replaced, possible burning one of the 3 low value resistors next to it. If you change the convergence settings now then they will have to be reset when the new IC is installed.
One of your convergence IC's is most likely the
problem. Check the IC's for cold solder joints
and also feel each heat sink the Ic is attached to, the one that is running the hottest is most
likely the bad IC. Also check resistors in front of the IC's for burnt, discolored, changed
