If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing

  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
im replacing the heater core - f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

How do i remove a heater core on a 2001 grand cherokee

The heater core on your 2001 Jeep Cherokee is responsible for providing heat in the cab of your vehicle. Overtime or due to driving conditions, the heater core can become plugged with dust or corrosion and stop working. If it is not working properly, the heater in your Jeep will not warm the interior and could cause the windows to fog over. To avoid this, if you start seeing signs that the core is not working properly, you can remove it yourself in about 2 or 3 hours and save yourself the expense of having someone else do it.

just follow these steps:
  • 1

Detach the negative and positive battery cables from the battery of your 2001 Jeep Cherokee with an open end wrench and crescent wrench.

  • 2

Remove the cap from off the radiator and also from the top of the coolant overflow tank on the passenger side of the Jeep. Locate the drain valve at the base of the radiator and place a drain pan on the ground, below the drain valve.

  • 3

Open the drain valve on the radiator with an open end wrench and allow the coolant to drain into the pan completely. When it is finished, close the drain valve and remove the drain pan.

  • 4

Unfasten the dash pad on the top of the dashboard by using a screwdriver to undo the screws holding it in place. Check the defroster vent and remove any screws holding the vent screen in place.

  • 5

Remove the trim panel underneath the passenger side of the dashboard with a screwdriver and set it aside. Locate the plastic box that is sitting underneath the dashboard on the passenger side.

  • 6

Undo all the screws that are holding the plastic box in place with a screwdriver and set the box off to the side. Locate the heater core that was sitting inside the plastic box.

  • 7

Unscrew all the screws that are holding the heater core to the firewall with clamps underneath the dashboard. Remove the clamps from the heater core.

  • 8

Lay a piece of plastic sheeting on the passenger side floorboard to cover the carpet from any coolant remaining in the heater core. Pull the heater core away from the firewall until you see the hoses attached to the inlet and outlet pipes on the unit.

  • 9

Remove the water hoses from the pipes on the heater core by unscrewing the hose clamps with a screwdriver and sliding the hoses off the pipes.

  • 10

Take the old heater core out of the Jeep Cherokee and dispose of the unit. Recycle the drained coolant by taking the drain pan with the fluid to your local recycling center or automotive supply.

I have 1993 Cherokee Jeep. Have the dash put and now I can not locate screws in box to get to the heater core. Could you tell me where those screws are?

Their will be 4 or 5 bolts holding the housing to the fire wall that you have to get to from the engine compartment and maybe one of the housing that has a ground wire on it.

2001 jeep cherokee- had the heater core replaced in Feb. 2008, when you turn on heater barely any air, when you use defrost a snell and the windows fog up. When you turn off car sounds like ******* comes...

Sounds to me like the heater core is leaking again. If you're smelling antifreeze and the window fogs up then you're getting coolant into the heating system. Most likely cause is leaking hose to heater core or the heater core it's self.

Yes, there is not an access hole that allows any other method. Start by disconnecting heater hoses, then remove dashboard ***'y. Not too bad on Jeeps. Then you may or may not have to remove the whole HVAC box depending on where the lid for the heater core cavity sits. Usually this whole box must come out to get heater tubes thru the firewall. Then you can take the cover plate off, unbolt the tiny screws that hold down the arms, and remove the offending core. Good luck, takes me a day or less, and I've done it for years. Worth the 400-600 plus that shops charge for this if you are not into meticulous work, tiny screws, and lots of crawling around inside a Jeep. Don't worry, you're not alone in this. Only a handful of today's cars can be re-cored without removing the dash, or at least setting it back on the seat (on a blanket) to gain access to the HVAC box. Hope this helps you make your decision. TT
