I have just installed a black cartridge in my Brother MFC-440CN printer and on the small screen it says "ink empty-black". What could the problem be?

The usual obvious fix is to buy a new catridge, insert, power off machine, then switch back on to reset any sensors. But if the circuitry on the machine itself is faulty it wont fix it.

I used to own an MFC 260C. It had a perfectly good full ink catridge in it, that was working fine, until...it suddenly did not recognise the cartridge anymore.

I pulled the machine apart and found that 2 of the 4 sensors on the cct board at the back of the cartridge housing were loose. These sensors pass light through the exposed part of the cartridge to see if ink is there. So if these are faulty, you will never clear the "No Cartridge" or "Ink Empty..." or "Near EMpty Ink ..." messages on the MFC260C and prbably other similar printers in the MFC range.

Why did they fail? Because the soldering on these sensors was poor quality.

I would never buy another Brother machine because of this, also because they design the machine to be totally useless unless all the ink ccartridges are full. Shame on you Brother, and kiss my *** for the $160 pile of junk I bought off you that was only on its second batch of cartridges (ie very little use)

It could be just a faulty cartridge, but try turning off printer at power point, leave 5 to 10 minutes and turn on, alternative is remove and replace cartridge or return cartridge to shop you bought it from and get a replacement. Industry standard for OEM cartridges is 2% failure rate!!!

Indicates black ink empty when its not.

Try removing the cartridge and shaking it. Brother printers use an optical ink monitor with a float inside the cartridge. The float can get stuck sometimes and indicate incorrect ink level.
But keep in mind that printers often indicate 'empty' (on purpose) while there is still bit of ink left in the cartridge, to prevent running out of ink during printing. If shaking doesn't help, replace the cartridge.

I have a brother MFC-490CW and replaced the black ink, and my color ink has run out. It will not let me print as it says ink is low, so it won't even let me use the black? How do I print with only using...

By design, Brother printers stop all printing when one of the cartridges is empty. This is done to avoid cleaning cycles sucking air into the system, which could possibly damage the printhead.

Even if you print in black only by changing the print settings to "Mono" or "Grayscale" to avoid printing in color, cleaning cycles would still **** air from the empty color cartridge because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s).

After replacing the empty color cartridge, you could print in "Mono" or "Grayscale" to make better use of just the black ink.

Only black cartridge empty, but 3 full color crtrige say empty

Remove the color cartridges. On one end you can see the opaque
ink tank inside the main cart. housing. Cut a piece of black electrical
tape to fit around the three sides visible of the ink tank. Make sure the tape fits inside the housing and adheres to the tank itself. This makes the printer think your ink is always full but you can always tell when you need to refill/replace the ink(right?). Good Luck!

Borther MFC-440CN Can't I just use black cartridges w/o Colour?

Unfortunately, this is an all too common situation. The answer is no. The printer will purge the printhead in order to keep the head in good condition. This involves sucking down a small amount of ink everytime. Slowly but surely it will by default empty all your cartridges. There is nothing you can do about it.
Unfortunate but that is the way it is with all ink printers.

My MFC-440CN

Yes, an empty ink cartridge will prevent the printer from functioning.
Not all printers will do this, but the Brother MFC series will not print if any one of the cartridges are empty. Replace the cartridge and all should be fine.
