I would strongly encourage you to take this into your local bike shop. The bottom bracket (which is the part that has now loosened) should not come apart.
But... On the opposite side of the gear there should be a large disc and a big nut. Start by turning the large disc so that it is screwing back into the frame and tightening up your cranks. Get it too just tight, but the cranks still spin. Next tighten the big nut, this holds everything together.
The reason I recommend taking this into your shop is that it takes some aquired skill to be able to adjust the bearings so that they spin smooth and will not loosen again. Plus they can check the threading to make sure nothing has stripped and will most likely put a little loctite on the threads to keep the big nut from backing off. Also if you have loose ball bearings they can make sure there is the correct number, if you have cages then they can replace those. You do not want your cranks coming apart while your riding, this is a good way to get hurt.
