Question about Kenmore 53502 / 53504 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Replaced Start Relay because it was clicking...now?

Model number Kenmore 10653502300.....I replaced the start relay on my refrigerator, it started up and seemed to be blowing cold air back in, it seemed to be quietly running well. I'm not sure of how long it took but everything stopped except for the lights work. The compressor was hot to touch, but I think that's normal.... The fan is no longer blowing, actually it's dead silent. I've unplugged it, I have cleaned around the coils and vaccuumed to the best of my ability. ? THoughts?

Thanks for your reply.......Now I'm unsure if I have the start relay connected correctly. I can only get the new start relay to connect one way, is it possible that I just don't have it connected correctly? If I did connect it wrong, have I damaged the compressor? It ran for a little while and it's quiet now....I still have it unplugged... I know the start relay I took off was bad, when I shook it, particles came out of it.....

If you are sure you have the right start relay, and are positive the start and run connections are correct, the compressor may be bad. There is an internal overload/overheat thermostat inside the compressor. If the motor windings are partially shorted out it will run for a little bit then stop. It will probably start after several hours when cooled down. The other possibility is that you have the start and run terminals reversed. If the start winding can't kick out after a few minutes it will overheat. As a final test, disconnect all wires from compressor. Plug in the box and turn it on. Make a test cord with a plug, wire and some alligator clips. One clip on one side and two clips on the other pole. Single clip goes to the common terminal, One of the other goes to the run. The last one is briefly touched to the run terminal. Just keep it there long enough for the compressor to start then remove it. Let it run for a few hours. It should cool the box down completely. It will run until you stop it as it's not using the thermostat in the box. If it works this way replace the relay again. If it stops by itself the compressor needs to be replaced. This is almost never worth it to fix.

Try to buy a generic start relay. The brand i use is 3 in 1 . This is an electronic relay and is better than the original and cheaper. $20. You need to figure out if the compressor is 1/4 or 1/3 HP and you need the wiring diagram to locate the Start, Run, and Common terminals on the compressor. Sometimes if you get lucky the letters S, C, and R are stamped right on the compressor. The other way is to look at the old relay they are usually marked. The parts store can probably help on the HP rating. Most refrigerators 14 ft and under are 1/4 HP larger units 1/3 HP.

Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

I installed a new defrost timer and the compressor clicks but it will not come on. i have a kenmore ref 1069535780

The compressor clicking, this is related to faulty start up relay/ capacitor of compressor.this relay lets the compressor to start.if this relay is weak or faulty, then it will just click, but not let the compressor to start. This relay needs to be checked and replaced.--------- Click the link below for more help:-- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/refrigerator-compressor-clicks-but-it.html ------------ This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Compressor does not start all I get is a clicking sound when it tries to start model#970-65832c purchase July 2004

The clicking could be the start relay. If the start relay is bad, the compressor will not start and you will hear a clicking noise in 2-5 minute intervals. The clicking noise is the overload cutting the compressor off when it overheats from trying to start with a bad start relay. To find out if this is bad first unplug the refrigerator. Remove the lower cover from your refrigerator. Then take the cover off that is on the side of the compressor, you will see wires going to this. Now you should be able to see the start relay plugged on to the side of the compressor and unplug it. Now the best way to tell if it's bad is to shake it. If it rattles, it's bad and needs to be replaced. If not, most of the time it's ok. But rather than saying the compressors bad, you might want to replace it anyways because it does not cost much. A quick check on the compressor is to remove the start relay. You will see 3 pins connect a multi meter set for continuity. You should have continuity between any of the 3 pins. If you do not the compressor is bad. Also check from each pin to a good ground on the cabinet. There should be no continuity if there is the compressor is bad. If you replace it and it doesn't work then the compressor is bad and you'll need to call a repairman. (Note that compressors are very costly and are normally not worth fixing). You can enter your model # at Refrigerator clicking for diagrams and illustrations or to purchase a start relay. A 3 in 1 start relay will also work fine. All parts come with installation instructions. Not all models are available.

My Kenmore 106.56573300 is not getting cold and is clicking.

sounds to me based on your description that you possibly have a bad relay on compressor. it is possible the compressor has failed due to a bad start relay and what you are hearing is the overload kicking out when trying to start.. you will have to remove the back cover from refrigerator and gain access once you gain access remove bottom cover and you will see compressor... you can get parts from several online appliance places... kenmore i would probley go to
www.sears.com then hit the parts direct link on the top of page
enter your model number and a parts diagram will appear go to compressor picture and pick the relay /start and overload give that a shot if it still clicks the compressor has failed and will need to be replaced // good luck to you

Kenmore refrigerator compressor clicking

Relay on the compressor bad.

Try unpluging for 30 - 45 min until the compressor has cooled down then plug it back in. If it doesn't start replace the relay. Most service techs carry a universal relay and wiil put the relay on, if it starts, your good to go, if not, then the compressor is bad.
