I bought a new GE microwave today at Walmart. We plugged it in, the lights are on. It clicks like it is trying to come on but will not start cooking.

The problem is the magnetron, "heart of the microwave oven" or the inverter board if 7 years old or less.

check the door switches....i had an over the oven micowave with a bad door switch....thing is the switch cost 35.99 online and i bought a counter top microwave for 39.95 at walmart

Hi, try the microwave in another outlet, if it works there then the first outlet is bad but if the microwave does not work in another outlet then the microwave is faulty and you need to take it back to the store and get another one as a replacement...

if its the initial start of the heating of the microwave that you are refering to then you may have a damaged keypad this couldve happened at the factory hopefully you still have the reciept and are able to take it back and exchange for a new one.

Hello Fred. When the microwave won't heat, you usually have a defective power diode, high-voltage capacitor, or magnetron. I recommend that you consult with a qualified appliance repair technician for help in determining the problem and deciding what to do about it.
The reality of today, however, is that it rarely pays to repair a microwave oven since you can go to Walmart and get a new one with lots more bells and whistles for 50 dollars and up.

try to checked the fuse if its blown.and replace a new one,check also the power cord.

If not, then I would suspect a bad door switch or a problem on the control board.

Chances are the oven is designed for 60HZ and your supply is 50Hz. This will cause the unit to shut down because it thinks it is not getting the proper "interrupt" signal from the power line. You can check the owner's manual (or model number tag) and the manual for the converter.
