My Kirby is not engaging the belt after it was put back on. I took it off to clean brushes and did everything according to the video but the belt will still not engage and green light does not come on.

The belt is not on the motor shaft. Remove the head from the motor unit. With the belt centered on the brushroll, turn the belt lifter a full 3/4 turn counterclockwise to stretch the belt up onto the belt lifter finger. ( Look through the back to be sure the belt is streched into a loop over the finger.) Plce the head back on the motor unit and latch it in place, then turn the belt lifter fully clockwise to drop the belt onto the motor shaft. Be sure the brushroll is correctly installed in the head. Setting # 1 should face the floor.

This help the most. I borrowed my step-father's kirby. I took the head off to use the attachments and then could not get the head back on where the belt would go on the motor shaft. I found a users manual online that told me how to do it. I was doing it exactly like it said and it still did not work. They did not say anything about stretching the belt in the oposite direction and then turn it to the belt on position. I was excited about putting it on so I can use it thank you very much.

How do i replace the belt i took it off to clean it

Hi There,

Here's a very helpful video that we've shot showing you exactly how to replace the belt on a Kirby Generation series, including your G5. The video also shows you how to perform basic maintenance on your roller brush to prolong the life of the belt as long as possible. If you haven't already purchased a belt, and need to buy a new one, here's a link to the exact belt that's used on your repair:

Where does the fan belt go?

Hi There,

The belt on your Kirby Hertiage is put on almost exactly like the video below. The only difference on your model is that the brush actually rests in the bottom plate itself rather then the bell housing like the generation.

You can follow the same step by step instructions as the Generation in the video below, just put the belt around the brush, and put the brush into the bottom plate. Then put the bottom plate with the brush inserted, and the belt wrapped around the brush loose in the middle, back into the fan housing. Then turn the square shaped belt pulley on the font of the bell housing to the red setting. After the belt has been turned to OFF, then you may put the front bell housing back onto the vacuum cleaner, and after securing it onto the vacuum, now turn the belt pulley in the front back to BELT ON position.

The video will help you tremendously understand where and how the belt works on your Kirby. Here it is:

I need to replace the belt on my kirby.

If this is like my Kirby, there are colored slots on each end that slides the brush in and out and they are different sizes but the belt is connected in the middle. First take the bottom cover off. It should be made out of rubber and metal, and it pops off, you then slide out the brush, take the old belt off and look up inside where you took it off and there is s hook so you first hook the belt on there and stretch it and slide the brush back thru it and then stretch it a little so as to slide it back into the slots on each sde when it is in place you then put the cover back on and your done.

How to put the belt on ?

first things first...take the powerhead off of the front of the kirby. If you look at where the powerhead connects to the front of the kirby and you'll see a large hook...turn the hook using the crank on the front of the powerhead so that the belt is pulled up and away from the brushes. (OFF position) The hook stretches the belt so that it can fit over the fan driveshaft (its the finger looking thing that sticks out of the front of the kirby when the powerhead is removed.)

Next, place the two "feet" of the powerhead onto the "perch" located on the front of the kirby (under the driveshaft opening)....lock it on by turning the silver lever on the top of the kirby (the one under the hood/light)

Now spin the knob on the front of the kirby from off to on. This releases the belt from that hook in the powerhead so it can rest on the driveshaft. Off means the belt is off of the drive shaft and the brushes won't spin. On means the belt is on the driveshaft and the brushes will be spinning. But remember, the belt has to be stretched open on that hook inside the power head BEFORE the powerhead is placed on the front of the kirby. Otherwise the belt won't be connected to the spinning driveshaft, and the brushes won't spin

Replacing Belt

On the front of the power head is a knob with the KIRBY name on it. Rotate this knob in a counter clockwise direction and it will "lift" the belt off the motor spindle. Release the head lever, only one direction it will turn and remove the head. Turn the head over on its back, turn the KIRBY knob to release the old belt. Remove the brush guard by turning the two release fixtures. Remove the guard. Pry the brush out of the head. Remove the old belt. While the brush is out remove any build up of hair and lint off the ends that's where the bearings are. put a few drops of 3 in One oil on the ends. Put the new belt over the brush and re-install the brush into the head. the brush will go in only one way. With your finger pull the belt into the housing and rotate the KIRBY knob until the pawl inside grabs the belt. Re-install the brush guard by engaging the two metal pieces into the front of the head and pull down backwards over the head and rotate the holding clips back horizontal. re-install the powerhead on the machine, lock it in place and rotate the KIRBY knob clockwise. You should be all set!
