Question about Philips Magnavox 42MF521D/37 Television

Turns on by iself from an off state, menu features pop up randomly

My Philips Magnavox 42MF521D/37 is only 2 years old.

I first noticed about a month ago that the menu features would suddenly pop up, even if the batteries in the remote were removed. It happens about ever 5 minutes of normal viewing now. I can go back to the regular screen if I turn the TV on and then back on. Sometimes it seems like the longer I watch the set, the fewer pop-ups I get. I'm not sure about that, but it doesn't seem to be related to a build-up of heat.

Now my set is turning on all by itself in the middle of the night! My set is possessed!

Thank you. I know two tech-heads who work on TVs and stereos. I'll give this info to them, and see what they can do.

exact same problem, altho mine has not begun turning on in the middle of the night just yet. the menu comes up when first turned on, sometimes for 5 minutes and sometimes a half hour. when exited it simply comes back up again. finally it will stay off... until today. now it has begun coming up even while watching tv after it's been on for a bit.

i suspect it will shortly be time for a new television set :(

As stated above, i was having an issue with the menu repeatedly coming up. i updated the firmware and the problem is gone, the tv is working flawlessly! after much research i expected a hardware problem and was thinking a new tv was in the works (and was grumpy about it) but figured a firmware update cost nothing and was worth a go. was it ever! hope this helps others and things work out as well for them.

I had this problem with my 42MF521D/37 TV. The menu problem can be fixed with a firmware update from the Magnavox site. It worked for my menu problem. I still have the turning on by itself problem. In order to save myself $379 that the repair man wanted to fix that problem I opted to put the TV on its own power strip and use that for the on / off switch.

It is possible to have some components that have become thermo sensitive that are critical to the uPC and are effecting its operation. It is also possible that there is a cold solder connection in the uPC area or in the area of the TV's control panel that is triggering the request. It is also possible there is a defect on the TV's control panel itself that may be faulty.

The only way the tech will be able to find the fault would be to jigg mount the TV chassis, and start by pressing and pulling on the circuit board to see if it is a loose connection or cold solder connection.

The next easiest step would be to try a new control panel board.

The tech can use a heat gun and freeze spray to do thermo tests in the suspected areas to see if it is possible to zero in on any failing parts.

He can use a DVM and scope to monitor the voltage levels and stability and to see if there is any noise or voltage variations coming from the power supply distribution to the uPC and control areas.

After that in reference to the service manual to see if it is possible with a digital storage scope to monitor the data buss and check to see if there is anything recognizable.

This type of fault can be very time consuming and expensive to resolve. I have my doubts you will be able to fix this yourself, unless you have the training and facilities to follow all this up.

I can't operate my Philips Magnavox 42MF521D/37 Television

Philips has the FAQs and manuals for the 42MF52D/37 here: . The direct link to the User's guide is . You will need Adobe Reader of a similar program to read the manual.

Is there a specific problem you are having with your set? (OTA or cable setup or another issue) Please add a comment if you would like additional support. Note: digital OTA signals are subject to a "cliff effect" if your tuner doesn't get enough data from the antenna. This will be determined by the tuner, the antenna location (indoor, outdoor, elevation), distance from the transmitter, and any splitters or other wiring problems. I've seen failed amplified splitters turn into filters that block the incoming signal from reaching the TV.

Tv screen black

Try a hard restart, which simply means unplugging the power cord of the TV, and replugging it after 4 hours have passed. This technique reprograms the electronics, to a certain extent. If the picture does not return, then you might need the expertise of a repairman.

Buying a UK Tv and taking it to Portugal

Philips TVs are multi-standard, and will work in most of Europe, providing the country has 220v-250v mains electricity.

Just select the relevant region in the tuner menu.
