No Write permission when attaching Simpletech external drive to Mac OS 10

Attached the external drive to the Mac, and it says that I only have Read permission. I can't seem to get it to have write permission.

The Simpletech external drive is NTFS.

I have the same problem, and as a photographer who goes from using a MAC at work to a PC (unfortunately!) at home, I can't save anything I work on at work and continue to work on it at home! What a waste, I wish I had not purchased the drive. The box said MAC and PC compatible!

Simple just format it for PC first then it should work for both

if you format it for MAC first it will not work on the PC

PC are horrible for accessing files

mac's are more user friendly

File permissions on My Passport for mac

check the compatibility of the external hard drive. It might not support Mac. Probabely you external hard is in NTFS format and you need to reformat/re-partition it for using it in Mac OS.

I can't delete anything on my harddrive. It says it is locked. I have a mac comp.

You appear to have a permissions issue. You can check this by highliting your drive by clicking on it. Then do a "Get Info" on the drive by clicking on Get Info under the File menu or command-I on youtr keyboard. The Get Info window will then appear. Click on the lock at the bottom, enter your admin name and password, then you can change the permissions in that window. Make sure it says read and write for all. If it says Custom permissions, then it is an OS issue and you will need to call Apple.

I am using Mac and I can not change the permission on my hard drive 320 G Signature Mini to write it only lets me read what do I ...

Ahhh, this is a common problem. The only file system that is both Windows and Apple compliant is the FAT32 file system format. You will have to back up everything and reformat to FAT32.

If you use FAT32 you are restricted to on 4GB files... That means no movies, no long recording, nothing :-/

You can format the HDD with your Apple computer and have no restrictions. That file format is called Mac OS Extended Journalled. I reccomend this but keep in mind, it is NOT readable with all non-Mac friendly operating systems, especialy Windows :)

Unable to write , only read ????

This is probably formatted with NTFS, the hard drive format used by Vista and now Windows 7.

Mac's OS can't write to NTFS but it can read it. I assume the data is important, so try another PC to transfer to another hard MAC hard drive then port that into your Mac or You can try to down convert it to FAT if you are proficient with utilities.

My simpletech drive is showing on my iMac but I am unable to write any files to it. It says I can only "read" but it does not alow me to change the access.

These things come formatted for PCs--you have to go into Utilities on your mac (in hard drive click on Applications, Utilities folder, then Disk Utility, then click on the simpletech (that has the gb next to it), click on the drop down to change the format (MS-DOS if you want to read on both PCs and MAC, but MAC-OS for just Macs) re-name it on the drop down below that, then click on erase and then it's re-formatted.

Looking for the Mac driver for a 500gb

A ahhhh Mac driver? A mac should just pick up the fact that you plug in an external drive. It might even detect if it's formatted Windows NTFS. You probably have to format it for Mac OS.

If its 9.2 it may be because your mac is usb 1 and your external HDD is usb 2. It will recognize it but sometimes it takes longer to see the drive.

Permission Issues

This is a format problem, unfortunatley the mac has a different file system than a regular PC has. A mac can write PC files and mac files. PC's typically are not vice versa in writing to a mac hard disk. Only way around this one is to format the drive to be a PC drive. Then the mac and the PC should see it.
